Chapter 3
1 Peter 3
Likewise, ye wiues, be in subiection to your owne husbands, that if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be wonne by the conuersation of the wiues:
GenevaLikewise let the wiues bee subiect to their husbands, that euen they which obey not the worde, may without the worde be wonne by the conuersation of the wiues,
While they beholde your chaste conuersation coupled with feare:
GenevaWhile they beholde your pure conuersation, which is with feare.
Whose adorning, let it not bee that outward adorning, of plaiting the haire, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparell.
GenevaWhose apparelling, let it not be that outwarde, with broyded heare, and golde put about, or in putting on of apparell:
But let it bee the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, euen the ornament of a meeke and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
GenevaBut let it bee the hidde man of the heart, which consisteth in the incorruption of a meeke and quiet spirite, which is before God a thing much set by.
For after this manner in the olde time, the holy women also who trusted in God adorned themselues, beeing in subiection vnto their owne husbands.
GenevaFor euen after this maner in time past did the holy women, which trusted in God, tire them selues, and were subiect to their husbands.
Euen as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, whose daughters ye are as long as ye doe well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
GenevaAs Sara obeyed Abraham, and called him Sir: whose daughters ye are, whiles yee doe well, not being afraide of any terrour.
Likewise ye husbands, dwel with them according to knowledge, giuing honour vnto the wife as vnto the weaker vessel, and as being heires together of the grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered.
GenevaLikewise ye husbands, dwel with them as men of knowledge, giuing honour vnto the woman, as vnto the weaker vessell, euen as they which are heires together of the grace of life, that your prayers be not interrupted.
Finally be ye all of one minde, hauing compassion one of another, loue as brethren, be pitifull, be courteous,
GenevaFinally, be ye all of one minde: one suffer with another: loue as brethren: bee pitifull: bee courteous,
Not rendring euill for euill, or railing for railing: but contrarywise blessing, knowing that yee are thereunto called, that ye should inherite a blessing.
GenevaNot rendring euil for euill, neither rebuke for rebuke: but contrarywise blesse, knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should be heires of blessing.
For hee that will loue life, and see good dayes, let him refraine his tongue from euil, and his lips that they speake no guile:
GenevaFor if any man long after life, and to see good dayes, let him refraine his tongue from euill, and his lippes that they speake no guile.
Let him eschew euil and do good, let him seeke peace and ensue it.
GenevaLet him eschew euil, and do good: let him seeke peace, and follow after it.
For the eyes of the Lord are ouer the righteous, and his eares are open vnto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that doe euill.
GenevaFor the eyes of the Lord are ouer the righteous, and his eares are open vnto their prayers: and the face of the Lord is against them that do euil.
And who is hee that will harme you, if ye bee followers of that which is good?
GenevaAnd who is it that will harme you, if ye follow that which is good?
Καὶ τίς ὁ κακώσων ὑμᾶς ἐὰν τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ ζηλωταὶ γένησθε;
But and if ye suffer for righteousnes sake, happy are ye, and be not afraid of their terrour, neither be troubled:
GenevaNotwithstanding blessed are ye, if ye suffer for righteousnes sake. Yea, feare not their feare, neither be troubled.
But sanctifie the Lord God in your hearts, & be ready alwayes to giue an answere to euery man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekenesse and feare:
GenevaBut sanctifie the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready alwayes to giue an answere to euery man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekenesse and reuerence,
Hauing a good conscience, that whereas they speake euill of you, as of euill doers, they may bee ashamed that falsly accuse your good conuersation in Christ.
GenevaHauing a good coscience, that whe they speake euill of you as of euill doers, they may be ashamed, which slander your good conuersation in Christ.
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that yee suffer for well doing, then for euill doing.
GenevaFor it is better (if the will of God be so) that ye suffer for well doing, then for euil doing.
For Christ also hath once suffered for sinnes, the iust for the vniust, that he might bring vs to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.
GenevaFor Christ also hath once suffered for sinnes, the iust for the vniust, that he might bring vs to God, and was put to death concerning the flesh, but was quickened by the spirit.
By which also he went and preached vnto the spirits in prison,
GenevaBy the which hee also went, and preached vnto the spirits that are in prison.
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the dayes of Noah, while the Arke was a preparing: wherein few, that is, eight soules were saued by water.
GenevaWhich were in time passed disobedient, when once the long suffering of God abode in the dayes of Noe, while the Arke was preparing, wherein fewe, that is, eight soules were saued in the water.
The like figure whereunto, euen Baptisme, doth also now saue vs, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answere of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Iesus Christ.
GenevaWhereof the baptisme that nowe is, answering that figure, (which is not a putting away of the filth of the flesh, but a confident demaunding which a good conscience maketh to God) saueth vs also by the resurrection of Iesus Christ,
Who is gone into heauen, and is on the right hand of God, Angels, and authorities, and powers being made subiect vnto him.
GenevaWhich is at the right hand of God, gone into heauen, to whom the Angels, and Powers, and might are subiect.
