1 Samuel 4
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battell, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

וַ/יְהִ֥י דְבַר שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לְ/כָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַ/יֵּצֵ֣א יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ לִ/קְרַ֨את פְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים לַ/מִּלְחָמָ֗ה וַֽ/יַּחֲנוּ֙ עַל הָ/אֶ֣בֶן הָעֵ֔זֶר וּ/פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים חָנ֥וּ בַ/אֲפֵֽק
And the Philistines put themselues in aray against Israel: and when they ioyned battell, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the armie in the field, about foure thousand men.
GenevaAnd the Philistims put themselues in aray against Israel: and when they ioyned the battell, Israel was smitten downe before the Philistims: who slewe of the armie in the fielde about foure thousand men.
וַ/יַּעַרְכ֨וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים לִ/קְרַ֣את יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַ/תִּטֹּשׁ֙ הַ/מִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַ/יִּנָּ֥גֶף יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִ/פְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַ/יַּכּ֤וּ בַ/מַּֽעֲרָכָה֙ בַּ/שָּׂדֶ֔ה כְּ/אַרְבַּ֥עַת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִֽישׁ
¶ And when the people were come into the campe, the Elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten vs to day before the Philistines? Let vs fetch the Arke of the Couenant of the LORD out of Shiloh vnto vs, that when it commeth among vs, it may saue vs out of the hand of our enemies.

וַ/יָּבֹ֣א הָ/עָם֮ אֶל הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶה֒ וַ/יֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָ֣/מָּה נְגָפָ֧/נוּ יְהוָ֛ה הַ/יּ֖וֹם לִ/פְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים נִקְחָ֧ה אֵלֵ֣י/נוּ מִ/שִּׁלֹ֗ה אֶת אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וְ/יָבֹ֣א בְ/קִרְבֵּ֔/נוּ וְ/יֹשִׁעֵ֖/נוּ מִ/כַּ֥ף אֹיְבֵֽי/נוּ
So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the Arke of the Couenant of the LORD of hostes, which dwelleth betweene the Cherubims: and the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas were there, with the Arke of the Couenant of God.

וַ/יִּשְׁלַ֤ח הָ/עָם֙ שִׁלֹ֔ה וַ/יִּשְׂא֣וּ מִ/שָּׁ֗ם אֵ֣ת אֲר֧וֹן בְּרִית יְהוָ֛ה צְבָא֖וֹת יֹשֵׁ֣ב הַ/כְּרֻבִ֑ים וְ/שָׁ֞ם שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי עֵלִ֗י עִם אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית הָ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים חָפְנִ֖י וּ/פִֽינְחָֽס
And when the Arke of the Couenant of the LORD came into the campe, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang againe.
GenevaAnd when the Arke of the couenant of the Lord came into the hoste, all Israel shouted a mightie shoute, so that the earth rang againe.
וַ/יְהִ֗י כְּ/ב֨וֹא אֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית יְהוָה֙ אֶל הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶ֔ה וַ/יָּרִ֥עוּ כָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל תְּרוּעָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה וַ/תֵּהֹ֖ם הָ/אָֽרֶץ
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the campe of the Hebrewes? And they vnderstood, that the Arke of the LORD was come into the campe.
GenevaAnd when the Philistims heard the noyse of the shoute, they said, What meaneth the sound of this mightie shoute in the host of the Ebrewes? and they vnderstoode, that the Arke of the Lord was come into the hoste.
וַ/יִּשְׁמְע֤וּ פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ אֶת ק֣וֹל הַ/תְּרוּעָ֔ה וַ/יֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מֶ֠ה ק֣וֹל הַ/תְּרוּעָ֧ה הַ/גְּדוֹלָ֛ה הַ/זֹּ֖את בְּ/מַחֲנֵ֣ה הָ/עִבְרִ֑ים וַ/יֵּ֣דְע֔וּ כִּ֚י אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה בָּ֖א אֶל הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶֽה
And the Philistines were afraid, for they saide, God is come into the campe. And they said, Woe vnto vs: for there hath not bene such a thing heretofore.
GenevaAnd the Philistims were afraide, and saide, God is come into the hoste: therefore saide they, Wo vnto vs: for it hath not bene so heretofore.
וַ/יִּֽרְאוּ֙ הַ/פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים כִּ֣י אָמְר֔וּ בָּ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַ/יֹּאמְרוּ֙ א֣וֹי לָ֔/נוּ כִּ֣י לֹ֥א הָיְתָ֛ה כָּ/זֹ֖את אֶתְמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֹֽׁם
Woe vnto vs: who shall deliuer vs out of the hand of these mightie Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wildernesse.

א֣וֹי לָ֔/נוּ מִ֣י יַצִּילֵ֔/נוּ מִ/יַּ֛ד הָ/אֱלֹהִ֥ים הָ/אַדִּירִ֖ים הָ/אֵ֑לֶּה אֵ֧לֶּה הֵ֣ם הָ/אֱלֹהִ֗ים הַ/מַּכִּ֧ים אֶת מִצְרַ֛יִם בְּ/כָל מַכָּ֖ה בַּ/מִּדְבָּֽר
Bee strong, and quit your selues like men, O ye Philistines, that yee be not seruants vnto the Hebrewes, as they haue bene to you: quit your selues like men, and fight.
GenevaBe strong and play the men, O Philistims, that ye be not seruants vnto the Ebrewes, as they haue serued you: be valiant therefore, and fight.
הִֽתְחַזְּק֞וּ וִֽ/הְי֤וּ לַֽ/אֲנָשִׁים֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים פֶּ֚ן תַּעַבְד֣וּ לָ/עִבְרִ֔ים כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָבְד֖וּ לָ/כֶ֑ם וִ/הְיִיתֶ֥ם לַ/אֲנָשִׁ֖ים וְ/נִלְחַמְתֶּֽם
¶ And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled euery man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter, for there fell of Israel thirtie thousand footmen.

וַ/יִּלָּחֲמ֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַ/יִּנָּ֤גֶף יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַ/יָּנֻ֨סוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ לְ/אֹהָלָ֔י/ו וַ/תְּהִ֥י הַ/מַּכָּ֖ה גְּדוֹלָ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד וַ/יִּפֹּל֙ מִ/יִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף רַגְלִֽי
And the Arke of God was taken, and the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas were slaine.

וַ/אֲר֥וֹן אֱלֹהִ֖ים נִלְקָ֑ח וּ/שְׁנֵ֤י בְנֵֽי עֵלִי֙ מֵ֔תוּ חָפְנִ֖י וּ/פִֽינְחָֽס
¶ And there ran a man of Beniamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth vpon his head.

וַ/יָּ֤רָץ אִישׁ בִּנְיָמִן֙ מֵ/הַ/מַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה וַ/יָּבֹ֥א שִׁלֹ֖ה בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/ה֑וּא וּ/מַדָּ֣י/ו קְרֻעִ֔ים וַ/אֲדָמָ֖ה עַל רֹאשֽׁ/וֹ
And when hee came, loe, Eli sate vpon a seat by the way side, watching: for his heart trembled for the Arke of God. And when the man came into the citie, and told it, all the city cried out.

וַ/יָּב֗וֹא וְ/הִנֵּ֣ה עֵ֠לִי יֹשֵׁ֨ב עַֽל הַ/כִּסֵּ֜א יך דֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ מְצַפֶּ֔ה כִּֽי הָיָ֤ה לִבּ/וֹ֙ חָרֵ֔ד עַ֖ל אֲר֣וֹן הָ/אֱלֹהִ֑ים וְ/הָ/אִ֗ישׁ בָּ֚א לְ/הַגִּ֣יד בָּ/עִ֔יר וַ/תִּזְעַ֖ק כָּל הָ/עִֽיר
And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, hee said; What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
GenevaAnd when Eli heard the noyse of the crying, he sayd, What meaneth this noyse of the tumult? and the man came in hastily, and tolde Eli.
וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֤ע עֵלִי֙ אֶת ק֣וֹל הַ/צְּעָקָ֔ה וַ/יֹּ֕אמֶר מֶ֛ה ק֥וֹל הֶ/הָמ֖וֹן הַ/זֶּ֑ה וְ/הָ/אִ֣ישׁ מִהַ֔ר וַ/יָּבֹ֖א וַ/יַּגֵּ֥ד לְ/עֵלִֽי
Now Eli was ninetie and eight yeeres old, and his eyes were dimme, that he could not see.
Geneva(Nowe Eli was fourescore and eighteene yeere olde, and his eyes were dimme that hee could not see)
וְ/עֵלִ֕י בֶּן תִּשְׁעִ֥ים וּ/שְׁמֹנֶ֖ה שָׁנָ֑ה וְ/עֵינָ֣י/ו קָ֔מָה וְ/לֹ֥א יָכ֖וֹל לִ/רְאֽוֹת
And the man said vnto Eli, I am he, that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my sonne?
GenevaAnd the man sayd vnto Eli, I came from the armie, and I fled this day out of the hoste: and he sayd, What thing is done, my sonne?
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר הָ/אִ֜ישׁ אֶל עֵלִ֗י אָֽנֹכִי֙ הַ/בָּ֣א מִן הַ/מַּעֲרָכָ֔ה וַ/אֲנִ֕י מִן הַ/מַּעֲרָכָ֖ה נַ֣סְתִּי הַ/יּ֑וֹם וַ/יֹּ֛אמֶר מֶֽה הָיָ֥ה הַ/דָּבָ֖ר בְּנִֽ/י
And the messenger answered, and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath bene also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sonnes also, Hophni & Phinehas, are dead, and the Arke of God is taken.

וַ/יַּ֨עַן הַֽ/מְבַשֵּׂ֜ר וַ/יֹּ֗אמֶר נָ֤ס יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לִ/פְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְ/גַ֛ם מַגֵּפָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה הָיְתָ֣ה בָ/עָ֑ם וְ/גַם שְׁנֵ֨י בָנֶ֜י/ךָ מֵ֗תוּ חָפְנִי֙ וּ/פִ֣ינְחָ֔ס וַ/אֲר֥וֹן הָ/אֱלֹהִ֖ים נִלְקָֽחָה
And it came to passe when hee made mention of the Arke of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his necke brake, and hee died: for hee was an old man, and heauie, and hee had iudged Israel fortie yeeres.

וַ/יְהִ֞י כְּ/הַזְכִּיר֣/וֹ אֶת אֲר֣וֹן הָ/אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַ/יִּפֹּ֣ל מֵֽ/עַל הַ֠/כִּסֵּא אֲחֹ֨רַנִּ֜ית בְּעַ֣ד יַ֣ד הַ/שַּׁ֗עַר וַ/תִּשָּׁבֵ֤ר מַפְרַקְתּ/וֹ֙ וַ/יָּמֹ֔ת כִּֽי זָקֵ֥ן הָ/אִ֖ישׁ וְ/כָבֵ֑ד וְ/ה֛וּא שָׁפַ֥ט אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה
¶ And his daughter in law Phinehas wife was with childe neere to be deliuered: and when shee heard the tidings that the Arke of God was taken, and that her father in law, and her husband were dead, shee bowed her selfe and traueyled; for her paines came vpon her.

וְ/כַלָּת֣/וֹ אֵֽשֶׁת פִּינְחָס֮ הָרָ֣ה לָ/לַת֒ וַ/תִּשְׁמַ֣ע אֶת הַ/שְּׁמֻעָ֔ה אֶל הִלָּקַח֙ אֲר֣וֹן הָ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים וּ/מֵ֥ת חָמִ֖י/הָ וְ/אִישָׁ֑/הּ וַ/תִּכְרַ֣ע וַ/תֵּ֔לֶד כִּֽי נֶהֶפְכ֥וּ עָלֶ֖י/הָ צִרֶֽי/הָ
And about the time of her death, the women that stood by her, said vnto her: Feare not, for thou hast borne a sonne. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

וּ/כְ/עֵ֣ת מוּתָ֗/הּ וַ/תְּדַבֵּ֨רְנָה֙ הַ/נִּצָּב֣וֹת עָלֶ֔י/הָ אַל תִּֽירְאִ֖י כִּ֣י בֵ֣ן יָלָ֑דְתְּ וְ/לֹ֥א עָנְתָ֖ה וְ/לֹא שָׁ֥תָה לִבָּֽ/הּ
And she named the childe Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel, (because the Arke of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.)

וַ/תִּקְרָ֣א לַ/נַּ֗עַר אִֽי כָבוֹד֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר גָּלָ֥ה כָב֖וֹד מִ/יִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֶל הִלָּקַח֙ אֲר֣וֹן הָ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְ/אֶל חָמִ֖י/הָ וְ/אִישָֽׁ/הּ
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the Arke of God is taken.
