Chapter 20
Deuteronomy 20
When thou goest out to battell against thine enemies, and seest horses and charets, and a people more then thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee vp out of the land of Egypt.
GenevaWhen thou shalt go forth to warre against thine enemies, and shalt see horses and charets, and people moe then thou, be not afrayde of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
כִּֽי תֵצֵ֨א לַ/מִּלְחָמָ֜ה עַל אֹיְבֶ֗י/ךָ וְֽ/רָאִ֜יתָ ס֤וּס וָ/רֶ֨כֶב֙ עַ֚ם רַ֣ב מִמְּ/ךָ֔ לֹ֥א תִירָ֖א מֵ/הֶ֑ם כִּֽי יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨י/ךָ֙ עִמָּ֔/ךְ הַ/מַּֽעַלְ/ךָ֖ מֵ/אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם
And it shall bee when ye are come nigh vnto the battell, that the Priest shall approach and speake vnto the people,
GenevaAnd when ye are come neere vnto the battel, then the Priest shall come forth to speake vnto the people,
וְ/הָיָ֕ה כְּ/קָֽרָבְ/כֶ֖ם אֶל הַ/מִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְ/נִגַּ֥שׁ הַ/כֹּהֵ֖ן וְ/דִבֶּ֥ר אֶל הָ/עָֽם
And shall say vnto them, Heare O Israel, you approach this day vnto battell against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, feare not, and doe not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them.
GenevaAnd shall say vnto them, Heare, O Israel: ye are come this day vnto battell against your enemies: let not your heartes faynt, neither feare, nor be amased, nor adread of them.
וְ/אָמַ֤ר אֲלֵ/הֶם֙ שְׁמַ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַתֶּ֨ם קְרֵבִ֥ים הַ/יּ֛וֹם לַ/מִּלְחָמָ֖ה עַל אֹיְבֵי/כֶ֑ם אַל יֵרַ֣ךְ לְבַבְ/כֶ֗ם אַל תִּֽירְא֧וּ וְ/אַֽל תַּחְפְּז֛וּ וְ/אַל תַּֽעַרְצ֖וּ מִ/פְּנֵי/הֶֽם
For the LORD your God is hee that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to saue you.
GenevaFor ye Lord your God goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, and to saue you
כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵי/כֶ֔ם הַ/הֹלֵ֖ךְ עִמָּ/כֶ֑ם לְ/הִלָּחֵ֥ם לָ/כֶ֛ם עִם אֹיְבֵי/כֶ֖ם לְ/הוֹשִׁ֥יעַ אֶתְ/כֶֽם
¶ And the Officers shall speake vnto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him goe and returne to his house, lest hee die in the battell, and an other man dedicate it.
GenevaAnd let the officers speake vnto the people, saying, What man is there that hath buylt a new house, and hath not dedicate it? let him go and returne to his house, least he dye in the battel, and an other man dedicate it.
וְ/דִבְּר֣וּ הַ/שֹּֽׁטְרִים֮ אֶל הָ/עָ֣ם לֵ/אמֹר֒ מִֽי הָ/אִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּנָ֤ה בַֽיִת חָדָשׁ֙ וְ/לֹ֣א חֲנָכ֔/וֹ יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְ/יָשֹׁ֣ב לְ/בֵית֑/וֹ פֶּן יָמוּת֙ בַּ/מִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְ/אִ֥ישׁ אַחֵ֖ר יַחְנְכֶֽ/נּוּ
And what man is hee that hath planted a Uineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and returne vnto his house, lest he die in the battell, and an other man eate of it.
GenevaAnd what man is there that hath planted a vineyarde, and hath not eaten of the fruite? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, least he die in the battel, and another eate the fruite.
וּ/מִֽי הָ/אִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁר נָטַ֥ע כֶּ֨רֶם֙ וְ/לֹ֣א חִלְּל֔/וֹ יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְ/יָשֹׁ֣ב לְ/בֵית֑/וֹ פֶּן יָמוּת֙ בַּ/מִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְ/אִ֥ישׁ אַחֵ֖ר יְחַלְּלֶֽ/נּוּ
And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him goe and returne vnto his house, lest he die in battell, and another man take her.
GenevaAnd what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, lest he die in the battell, and another man take her.
וּ/מִֽי הָ/אִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁר אֵרַ֤שׂ אִשָּׁה֙ וְ/לֹ֣א לְקָחָ֔/הּ יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְ/יָשֹׁ֣ב לְ/בֵית֑/וֹ פֶּן יָמוּת֙ בַּ/מִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְ/אִ֥ישׁ אַחֵ֖ר יִקָּחֶֽ/נָּה
And the Officers shall speake further vnto the people: and they shall say, What man is there that is fearefull and faint hearted? let him goe and returne vnto his house, lest his brethrens heart faint as well as his heart.
GenevaAnd let the officers speake further vnto the people, and say, Whosoeuer is afrayde and faynt hearted, let him go and returne vnto his house, least his brethrens heart faynt like his heart.
וְ/יָסְפ֣וּ הַ/שֹּׁטְרִים֮ לְ/דַבֵּ֣ר אֶל הָ/עָם֒ וְ/אָמְר֗וּ מִי הָ/אִ֤ישׁ הַ/יָּרֵא֙ וְ/רַ֣ךְ הַ/לֵּבָ֔ב יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְ/יָשֹׁ֣ב לְ/בֵית֑/וֹ וְ/לֹ֥א יִמַּ֛ס אֶת לְבַ֥ב אֶחָ֖י/ו כִּ/לְבָבֽ/וֹ
And it shall be when the Officers haue made an end of speaking vnto the people, that they shall make Captaines of the armies to leade the people.
GenevaAnd after that the officers haue made an ende of speaking vnto the people, they shall make captaines of the armie to gouerne the people.
וְ/הָיָ֛ה כְּ/כַלֹּ֥ת הַ/שֹּׁטְרִ֖ים לְ/דַבֵּ֣ר אֶל הָ/עָ֑ם וּ/פָֽקְד֛וּ שָׂרֵ֥י צְבָא֖וֹת בְּ/רֹ֥אשׁ הָ/עָֽם
¶ When thou commest nigh vnto a City to fight against it, then proclaime peace vnto it.
GenevaWhen thou commest neere vnto a citie to fight against it, thou shalt offer it peace.
כִּֽי תִקְרַ֣ב אֶל עִ֔יר לְ/הִלָּחֵ֖ם עָלֶ֑י/הָ וְ/קָרָ֥אתָ אֵלֶ֖י/הָ לְ/שָׁלֽוֹם
And it shall be, if it make thee answere of peace, and open vnto thee, then it shalbe that all the people that is found therein, shall be tributaries vnto thee, and they shall serue thee.
GenevaAnd if it answere thee againe peaceably, and open vnto thee, then let all the people that is founde therein, be tributaries vnto thee, and serue thee.
וְ/הָיָה֙ אִם שָׁל֣וֹם תַּֽעַנְ/ךָ֔ וּ/פָתְחָ֖ה לָ֑/ךְ וְ/הָיָ֞ה כָּל הָ/עָ֣ם הַ/נִּמְצָא בָ֗/הּ יִהְי֥וּ לְ/ךָ֛ לָ/מַ֖ס וַ/עֲבָדֽוּ/ךָ
And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make warre against thee, then thou shalt besiege it.
GenevaBut if it will make no peace with thee, but make war against thee, then shalt thou besiege it.
וְ/אִם לֹ֤א תַשְׁלִים֙ עִמָּ֔/ךְ וְ/עָשְׂתָ֥ה עִמְּ/ךָ֖ מִלְחָמָ֑ה וְ/צַרְתָּ֖ עָלֶֽי/הָּ
And when the LORD thy God hath deliuered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite euery male thereof with the edge of the sword.
GenevaAnd the Lord thy God shall deliuer it into thine handes, and thou shalt smite all the males thereof with the edge of the sworde.
וּ/נְתָנָ֛/הּ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖י/ךָ בְּ/יָדֶ֑/ךָ וְ/הִכִּיתָ֥ אֶת כָּל זְכוּרָ֖/הּ לְ/פִי חָֽרֶב
But the women, and the litle ones, and the cattell, and all that is in the citie, euen all the spoile thereof, shalt thou take vnto thy selfe, and thou shalt eate the spoile of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath giuen thee.
GenevaOnely the women, and the children, and the cattel, and all that is in the citie, euen all the spoyle thereof shalt thou take vnto thy selfe, and shalt eate the spoyle of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath giuen thee.
רַ֣ק הַ֠/נָּשִׁים וְ/הַ/טַּ֨ף וְ/הַ/בְּהֵמָ֜ה וְ/כֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִהְיֶ֥ה בָ/עִ֛יר כָּל שְׁלָלָ֖/הּ תָּבֹ֣ז לָ֑/ךְ וְ/אָֽכַלְתָּ֙ אֶת שְׁלַ֣ל אֹיְבֶ֔י/ךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֛ן יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖י/ךָ לָֽ/ךְ
Thus shalt thou doe vnto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
GenevaThus shalt thou do vnto all ye cities, which are a great way off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations here.
כֵּ֤ן תַּעֲשֶׂה֙ לְ/כָל הֶ֣/עָרִ֔ים הָ/רְחֹקֹ֥ת מִמְּ/ךָ֖ מְאֹ֑ד אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא מֵ/עָרֵ֥י הַ/גּֽוֹיִם הָ/אֵ֖לֶּה הֵֽנָּה
But of the cities of these people which the LORD thy God doth giue thee for an inheritance, thou shalt saue aliue nothing that breatheth:
GenevaBut of the cities of this people, which the Lord thy God shall giue thee to inherite, thou shalt saue no person aliue,
רַ֗ק מֵ/עָרֵ֤י הָֽ/עַמִּים֙ הָ/אֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔י/ךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְ/ךָ֖ נַחֲלָ֑ה לֹ֥א תְחַיֶּ֖ה כָּל נְשָׁמָֽה
But thou shalt vtterly destroy them, namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:
GenevaBut shalt vtterly destroy them: to wit, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee,
כִּֽי הַחֲרֵ֣ם תַּחֲרִימֵ֗/ם הַ/חִתִּ֤י וְ/הָ/אֱמֹרִי֙ הַ/כְּנַעֲנִ֣י וְ/הַ/פְּרִזִּ֔י הַ/חִוִּ֖י וְ/הַ/יְבוּסִ֑י כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוְּ/ךָ֖ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽי/ךָ
That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they haue done vnto their gods, so should ye sinne against the LORD your God.
GenevaThat they teache you not to doe after all their abominations, which they haue done vnto their gods, and so ye should sinne against the Lord your God.
לְמַ֗עַן אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא יְלַמְּד֤וּ אֶתְ/כֶם֙ לַ/עֲשׂ֔וֹת כְּ/כֹל֙ תּֽוֹעֲבֹתָ֔/ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשׂ֖וּ לֵֽ/אלֹהֵי/הֶ֑ם וַ/חֲטָאתֶ֖ם לַ/יהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵי/כֶֽם
¶ When thou shalt besiege a citie a long time, in making warre against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof, by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eate of them, and thou shalt not cut them downe ( for the tree of the field is mans life) to employ them in the siege.
GenevaWhen thou hast besieged a citie long time, and made warre against it to take it, destroy not the trees therof, by smiting an axe into them: for thou mayest eate of them: therfore thou shalt not cut them downe to further thee in the siege, (for the tree of the field is mans life)
כִּֽי תָצ֣וּר אֶל עִיר֩ יָמִ֨ים רַבִּ֜ים לְֽ/הִלָּחֵ֧ם עָלֶ֣י/הָ לְ/תָפְשָׂ֗/הּ לֹֽא תַשְׁחִ֤ית אֶת עֵצָ/הּ֙ לִ/נְדֹּ֤חַ עָלָי/ו֙ גַּרְזֶ֔ן כִּ֚י מִמֶּ֣/נּוּ תֹאכֵ֔ל וְ/אֹת֖/וֹ לֹ֣א תִכְרֹ֑ת כִּ֤י הָֽ/אָדָם֙ עֵ֣ץ הַ/שָּׂדֶ֔ה לָ/בֹ֥א מִ/פָּנֶ֖י/ךָ בַּ/מָּצֽוֹר
Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meate, thou shalt destroy, and cut them downe, and thou shalt build bulwarkes against the city that maketh warre with thee, vntil it be subdued.
GenevaOnely those trees, which thou knowest are not for meate, those shalt thou destroy and cut downe, and make fortes against the citie that maketh warre with thee, vntil thou subdue it.
רַ֞ק עֵ֣ץ אֲשֶׁר תֵּדַ֗ע כִּֽי לֹא עֵ֤ץ מַאֲכָל֙ ה֔וּא אֹת֥/וֹ תַשְׁחִ֖ית וְ/כָרָ֑תָּ וּ/בָנִ֣יתָ מָצ֗וֹר עַל הָ/עִיר֙ אֲשֶׁר הִ֨וא עֹשָׂ֧ה עִמְּ/ךָ֛ מִלְחָמָ֖ה עַ֥ד רִדְתָּֽ/הּ
