Chapter 49
Isaiah 49
Listen, O yles, vnto me, and hearken yee people from farre. The LORD hath called mee from the wombe, from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
GenevaHear yee me, O yles, and hearken, yee people from farre. The Lord hath called me from the wombe, and made mention of my name from my mothers bellie.
שִׁמְע֤וּ אִיִּים֙ אֵלַ֔/י וְ/הַקְשִׁ֥יבוּ לְאֻמִּ֖ים מֵ/רָח֑וֹק יְהוָה֙ מִ/בֶּ֣טֶן קְרָאָ֔/נִי מִ/מְּעֵ֥י אִמִּ֖/י הִזְכִּ֥יר שְׁמִֽ/י
And he hath made my mouth like a sharpe sword, in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made mee a polished shaft; in his quiuer hath hee hid me,
GenevaAnd hee hath made my mouth like a sharpe sworde: vnder the shadowe of his hande hath he hid mee, and made me a chosen shafte, and hid me in his quiuer,
וַ/יָּ֤שֶׂם פִּ/י֙ כְּ/חֶ֣רֶב חַדָּ֔ה בְּ/צֵ֥ל יָד֖/וֹ הֶחְבִּיאָ֑/נִי וַ/יְשִׂימֵ֨/נִי֙ לְ/חֵ֣ץ בָּר֔וּר בְּ/אַשְׁפָּת֖/וֹ הִסְתִּירָֽ/נִי
And sayd vnto me; Thou art my seruant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
GenevaAnd sayd vnto me, Thou art my seruaunt, Israel, for I will be glorious in thee.
וַ/יֹּ֥אמֶר לִ֖/י עַבְדִּ/י אָ֑תָּה יִשְׂרָאֵ֕ל אֲשֶׁר בְּ/ךָ֖ אֶתְפָּאָֽר
Then I said; I haue laboured in vaine, I haue spent my strength for nought, and in vaine, yet surely my iudgement is with the LORD, and my worke with my God.
GenevaAnd I said, I haue labored in vaine: I haue spent my strength in vaine and for nothing: but my iudgement is with the Lord, and my woorke with my God.
וַ/אֲנִ֤י אָמַ֨רְתִּי֙ לְ/רִ֣יק יָגַ֔עְתִּי לְ/תֹ֥הוּ וְ/הֶ֖בֶל כֹּחִ֣/י כִלֵּ֑יתִי אָכֵן֙ מִשְׁפָּטִ֣/י אֶת יְהוָ֔ה וּ/פְעֻלָּתִ֖/י אֶת אֱלֹהָֽ/י
¶ And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the wombe to be his seruant, to bring Iacob againe to him; Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall bee my strength.
GenevaAnd now sayeth the Lord, that formed me from the wombe to be his seruaunt, that I may bring Iaakob againe to him (though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I bee glorious in the eyes of the Lord: and my God shall be my strength)
וְ/עַתָּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה יֹצְרִ֤/י מִ/בֶּ֨טֶן֙ לְ/עֶ֣בֶד ל֔/וֹ לְ/שׁוֹבֵ֤ב יַֽעֲקֹב֙ אֵלָ֔י/ו וְ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לא יֵאָסֵ֑ף וְ/אֶכָּבֵד֙ בְּ/עֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וֵ/אלֹהַ֖/י הָיָ֥ה עֻזִּֽ/י
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my seruant to raise vp the tribes of Iacob, and to restore the preserued of Israel: I will also giue thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my saluation, vnto the end of the earth.
GenevaAnd hee sayde, It is a small thing that thou shouldest be my seruaunt, to raise vp the tribes of Iaakob, and to restore the desolations of Israel: I will also giue thee for a light of the Gentiles, that thou maiest bee my saluation vnto the ende of the worlde.
וַ/יֹּ֗אמֶר נָקֵ֨ל מִֽ/הְיוֹתְ/ךָ֥ לִ/י֙ עֶ֔בֶד לְ/הָקִים֙ אֶת שִׁבְטֵ֣י יַעֲקֹ֔ב ו/נצירי יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְ/הָשִׁ֑יב וּ/נְתַתִּ֨י/ךָ֙ לְ/א֣וֹר גּוֹיִ֔ם לִֽ/הְי֥וֹת יְשׁוּעָתִ֖/י עַד קְצֵ֥ה הָ/אָֽרֶץ
Thus saith the LORD the redeemer of Israel, and his holy one, to him whom man dispiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a seruant of rulers; Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD, that is faithfull, and the holy one of Israel, and he shall choose thee.
GenevaThus sayeth the Lord the redeemer of Israel, and his Holie one, to him that is despised in soule, to a nation that is abhorred, to a seruaunt of rulers, Kinges shall see, and arise, and princes shall worship, because of the Lord, that is faithfull: and ye Holy one of Israel, which hath chosen thee.
כֹּ֣ה אָֽמַר יְהוָה֩ גֹּאֵ֨ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל קְדוֹשׁ֗/וֹ לִ/בְזֹה נֶ֜פֶשׁ לִ/מְתָ֤עֵֽב גּוֹי֙ לְ/עֶ֣בֶד מֹשְׁלִ֔ים מְלָכִים֙ יִרְא֣וּ וָ/קָ֔מוּ שָׂרִ֖ים וְ/יִֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֑וּ לְמַ֤עַן יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נֶאֱמָ֔ן קְדֹ֥שׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַ/יִּבְחָרֶֽ/ךָּ
Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time haue I heard thee, and in a day of saluation haue I helped thee: and I will preserue thee, and giue thee for a couenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherite the desolate heritages:
GenevaThus sayeth the Lord, In an acceptable time haue I heard thee, and in a day of saluation haue I helped thee: and I will preserue thee, and wil giue thee for a couenant of ye people, that thou maiest raise vp the earth, and obtaine the inheritance of the desolate heritages:
כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה בְּ/עֵ֤ת רָצוֹן֙ עֲנִיתִ֔י/ךָ וּ/בְ/י֥וֹם יְשׁוּעָ֖ה עֲזַרְתִּ֑י/ךָ וְ/אֶצָּרְ/ךָ֗ וְ/אֶתֶּנְ/ךָ֙ לִ/בְרִ֣ית עָ֔ם לְ/הָקִ֣ים אֶ֔רֶץ לְ/הַנְחִ֖יל נְחָל֥וֹת שֹׁמֵמֽוֹת
That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Goe forth; to them that are in darkenesse, Shewe your selues: they shall feede in the wayes, and their pastures shalbe in all high places.
GenevaThat thou maiest say to the prisoners, Goe foorth: and to them that are in darkenesse, Shewe your selues: they shall feede in the waies, and their pastures shall bee in all the toppes of the hilles.
לֵ/אמֹ֤ר לַֽ/אֲסוּרִים֙ צֵ֔אוּ לַ/אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּ/חֹ֖שֶׁךְ הִגָּל֑וּ עַל דְּרָכִ֣ים יִרְע֔וּ וּ/בְ/כָל שְׁפָיִ֖ים מַרְעִיתָֽ/ם
They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heate nor sunne smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, euen by the springs of water shall he guide them.
GenevaThey shall not be hungrie, neither shall they be thirstie, neither shall the heat smite them, nor the sunne: for he that hath compassion on them, shall leade them: euen to the springs of waters shall he driue them.
לֹ֤א יִרְעָ֨בוּ֙ וְ/לֹ֣א יִצְמָ֔אוּ וְ/לֹא יַכֵּ֥/ם שָׁרָ֖ב וָ/שָׁ֑מֶשׁ כִּי מְרַחֲמָ֣/ם יְנַהֲגֵ֔/ם וְ/עַל מַבּ֥וּעֵי מַ֖יִם יְנַהֲלֵֽ/ם
And I will make all my mountaines a way, and my high wayes shall be exalted.
GenevaAnd I will make all my mountaines, as a way, and my paths shalbe exalted.
וְ/שַׂמְתִּ֥י כָל הָרַ֖/י לַ/דָּ֑רֶךְ וּ/מְסִלֹּתַ֖/י יְרֻמֽוּ/ן
Behold, these shall come from far: and loe, these from the North and from the West, and these from the land of Sinim.
GenevaBeholde, these shall come from farre: and loe, these from the North and from the West, and these from the land of Sinim.
הִנֵּה אֵ֕לֶּה מֵ/רָח֖וֹק יָבֹ֑אוּ וְ/הִֽנֵּה אֵ֨לֶּה֙ מִ/צָּפ֣וֹן וּ/מִ/יָּ֔ם וְ/אֵ֖לֶּה מֵ/אֶ֥רֶץ סִינִֽים
¶ Sing, O heauen, and be ioyfull, O earth, and breake forth into singing, O mountaines: for God hath comforted his people, and will haue mercy vpon his afflicted.
GenevaReioyce, O heauens: and bee ioyfull, O earth: brast foorth into praise, O mountaines: for God hath comforted his people, and will haue mercie vpon his afflicted.
רָנּ֤וּ שָׁמַ֨יִם֙ וְ/גִ֣ילִי אָ֔רֶץ יפצחו הָרִ֖ים רִנָּ֑ה כִּֽי נִחַ֤ם יְהוָה֙ עַמּ֔/וֹ וַ/עֲנִיָּ֖/ו יְרַחֵֽם
But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.
GenevaBut Zion saide, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.
וַ/תֹּ֥אמֶר צִיּ֖וֹן עֲזָבַ֣/נִי יְהוָ֑ה וַ/אדֹנָ֖/י שְׁכֵחָֽ/נִי
Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not haue compassion on the sonne of her wombe? yea they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.
GenevaCan a woman forget her childe, and not haue compassion on the sonne of her wombe? though they should forget, yet wil I not forget thee.
הֲ/תִשְׁכַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ עוּלָ֔/הּ מֵ/רַחֵ֖ם בֶּן בִּטְנָ֑/הּ גַּם אֵ֣לֶּה תִשְׁכַּ֔חְנָה וְ/אָנֹכִ֖י לֹ֥א אֶשְׁכָּחֵֽ/ךְ
Behold, I haue grauen thee vpon the palmes of my hands: thy walles are continually before mee.
GenevaBehold, I haue grauen thee vpon the palme of mine hands: thy walles are euer in my sight.
הֵ֥ן עַל כַּפַּ֖יִם חַקֹּתִ֑י/ךְ חוֹמֹתַ֥יִ/ךְ נֶגְדִּ֖/י תָּמִֽיד
Thy children shal make haste, thy destroyers, and they that made thee waste, shall goe forth of thee.
GenevaThy builders make haste: thy destroiers and they that made thee waste, are departed from thee.
מִֽהֲר֖וּ בָּנָ֑יִ/ךְ מְהָֽרְסַ֥יִ/ךְ וּ/מַחֲרִבַ֖יִ/ךְ מִמֵּ֥/ךְ יֵצֵֽאוּ
¶ Lift vp thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselues together and come to thee: as I liue, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee as a bride doeth.
GenevaLift vp thine eies round about and behold: all these gather themselues together and come to thee: as I liue, sayeth the Lord, thou shalt surely put them all vpon thee as a garment, and girde thy selfe with them like a bride.
שְׂאִֽי סָבִ֤יב עֵינַ֨יִ/ךְ֙ וּ/רְאִ֔י כֻּלָּ֖/ם נִקְבְּצ֣וּ בָֽאוּ לָ֑/ךְ חַי אָ֣נִי נְאֻם יְהוָ֗ה כִּ֤י כֻלָּ/ם֙ כָּ/עֲדִ֣י תִלְבָּ֔שִׁי וּֽ/תְקַשְּׁרִ֖י/ם כַּ/כַּלָּֽה
For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction shall euen now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee vp, shall bee farre away.
GenevaFor thy desolations, and thy waste places, and thy land destroied, shall surely be now narow for them that shall dwell in it, and they that did deuoure thee, shalbe farre away.
כִּ֤י חָרְבֹתַ֨יִ/ךְ֙ וְ/שֹׁ֣מְמֹתַ֔יִ/ךְ וְ/אֶ֖רֶץ הֲרִֽסֻתֵ֑י/ךְ כִּ֤י עַתָּה֙ תֵּצְרִ֣י מִ/יּוֹשֵׁ֔ב וְ/רָחֲק֖וּ מְבַלְּעָֽיִ/ךְ
The children which thou shalt haue, after thou hast lost the other, shall say againe in thine eares, The place is too straight for me: giue place to mee that I may dwell.
GenevaThe children of thy barennesse shall say againe in thine eares, The place is straict for mee: giue place to me that I may dwell.
ע֚וֹד יֹאמְר֣וּ בְ/אָזְנַ֔יִ/ךְ בְּנֵ֖י שִׁכֻּלָ֑יִ/ךְ צַר לִ֥/י הַ/מָּק֖וֹם גְּשָׁ/ה לִּ֥/י וְ/אֵשֵֽׁבָה
Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I haue lost my children and am desolate, a captiue and remouing to and fro? and who hath brought vp these? Beholde, I was left alone, these where had they beene?
GenevaThen shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten mee these, seeing I am baren and desolate, a captiue and a wanderer to and from? and who hath nourished them? beholde, I was left alone: whence are these?
וְ/אָמַ֣רְתְּ בִּ/לְבָבֵ֗/ךְ מִ֤י יָֽלַד לִ/י֙ אֶת אֵ֔לֶּה וַ/אֲנִ֥י שְׁכוּלָ֖ה וְ/גַלְמוּדָ֑ה גֹּלָ֣ה וְ/סוּרָ֗ה וְ/אֵ֨לֶּה֙ מִ֣י גִדֵּ֔ל הֵ֤ן אֲנִי֙ נִשְׁאַ֣רְתִּי לְ/בַדִּ֔/י אֵ֖לֶּה אֵיפֹ֥ה הֵֽם
Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift vp mine hand to the Gentiles, and set vp my standerd to the people: and they shall bring thy sonnes in their armes: and thy daughters shal be caried vpon their shoulders.
GenevaThus sayeth the Lord God, Beholde, I will lift vp mine hande to the Gentiles and set vp my stadart to the people, and they shall bring thy sonnes in their armes: and thy daughters shall be caried vpon their shoulders.
כֹּֽה אָמַ֞ר אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אֶשָּׂ֤א אֶל גּוֹיִם֙ יָדִ֔/י וְ/אֶל עַמִּ֖ים אָרִ֣ים נִסִּ֑/י וְ/הֵבִ֤יאוּ בָנַ֨יִ/ךְ֙ בְּ/חֹ֔צֶן וּ/בְנֹתַ֖יִ/ךְ עַל כָּתֵ֥ף תִּנָּשֶֽׂאנָה
And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queenes thy nursing mothers: they shall bow downe to thee with their face toward the earth, and licke vp the dust of thy feete, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that waite for me.
GenevaAnd Kings shalbe thy nourcing fathers, and Queenes shalbe thy nources: they shall worship thee with their faces towarde the earth, and licke vp the dust of thy feete: and thou shalt knowe that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that waite for me.
וְ/הָי֨וּ מְלָכִ֜ים אֹֽמְנַ֗יִ/ךְ וְ/שָׂרֽוֹתֵי/הֶם֙ מֵינִ֣יקֹתַ֔יִ/ךְ אַפַּ֗יִם אֶ֚רֶץ יִשְׁתַּ֣חֲווּ לָ֔/ךְ וַ/עֲפַ֥ר רַגְלַ֖יִ/ךְ יְלַחֵ֑כוּ וְ/יָדַ֨עַתְּ֙ כִּֽי אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא יֵבֹ֖שׁוּ קוָֹֽ/י
¶ Shall the pray be taken from the mightie, or the lawfull captiue deliuered?
GenevaShall the pray be taken from the mightie? or the iust captiuitie deliuered?
הֲ/יֻקַּ֥ח מִ/גִּבּ֖וֹר מַלְק֑וֹחַ וְ/אִם שְׁבִ֥י צַדִּ֖יק יִמָּלֵֽט
But thus saith the LORD, Euen the captiues of the mightie shall be taken away, and the pray of the terrible shall be deliuered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will saue thy children.
GenevaBut thus sayeth the Lord, euen the captiuitie of the mightie shall be taken away: and the pray of the tyrant shall be deliuered: for I wil contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will saue thy children,
כִּי כֹ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה גַּם שְׁבִ֤י גִבּוֹר֙ יֻקָּ֔ח וּ/מַלְק֥וֹחַ עָרִ֖יץ יִמָּלֵ֑ט וְ/אֶת יְרִיבֵ/ךְ֙ אָנֹכִ֣י אָרִ֔יב וְ/אֶת בָּנַ֖יִ/ךְ אָנֹכִ֥י אוֹשִֽׁיעַ
And I will feede them that oppresse thee, with their owne flesh, and they shall be drunken with their owne blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Sauiour and thy Redeemer, the mightie One of Iacob.
GenevaAnd will feede them that spoile thee, with their owne flesh, and they shall be drunken with their owne bloode, as with sweete wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy sauiour and thy redeemer, the mighty one of Iaakob.
וְ/הַאֲכַלְתִּ֤י אֶת מוֹנַ֨יִ/ךְ֙ אֶת בְּשָׂרָ֔/ם וְ/כֶ/עָסִ֖יס דָּמָ֣/ם יִשְׁכָּר֑וּ/ן וְ/יָדְע֣וּ כָל בָּשָׂ֗ר כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ מֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֔/ךְ וְ/גֹאֲלֵ֖/ךְ אֲבִ֥יר יַעֲקֹֽב
