Chapter 9
Job 9
Then Iob answered, and said,
GenevaThen Iob answered, and sayd,
וַ/יַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַ/יֹּאמַֽר
I know it is so of a trueth: but howe should man be iust with God.
GenevaI knowe verily that it is so: for howe should man compared vnto God, be iustified?
אָ֭מְנָם יָדַ֣עְתִּי כִי כֵ֑ן וּ/מַה יִּצְדַּ֖ק אֱנ֣וֹשׁ עִם אֵֽל
If he will contend with him, he cannot answere him one of a thousand.
GenevaIf I would dispute with him, hee could not answere him one thing of a thousand.
אִם יַ֭חְפֹּץ לָ/רִ֣יב עִמּ֑/וֹ לֹֽא יַ֝עֲנֶ֗/נּוּ אַחַ֥ת מִנִּי אָֽלֶף
He is wise in heart, and mightie in strength: who hath hardened himselfe against him, and hath prospered?
GenevaHe is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath bene fierce against him and hath prospered?
חֲכַ֣ם לֵ֭בָב וְ/אַמִּ֣יץ כֹּ֑חַ מִֽי הִקְשָׁ֥ה אֵ֝לָ֗י/ו וַ/יִּשְׁלָֽם
Which remoueth the mountains, and they know not: which ouerturneth them in his anger:
GenevaHe remoueth the mountaines, and they feele not when he ouerthroweth them in his wrath.
הַ/מַּעְתִּ֣יק הָ֭רִים וְ/לֹ֣א יָדָ֑עוּ אֲשֶׁ֖ר הֲפָכָ֣/ם בְּ/אַפּֽ/וֹ
Which shaketh the earth out of her place, & the pillars thereof tremble:
GenevaHee remooueth the earth out of her place, that the pillars thereof doe shake.
הַ/מַּרְגִּ֣יז אֶ֭רֶץ מִ/מְּקוֹמָ֑/הּ וְ֝/עַמּוּדֶ֗י/הָ יִתְפַלָּצֽוּ/ן
Which commandeth the Sunne, and it riseth not: and sealeth vp the starres.
GenevaHe commandeth the sunne, and it riseth not: hee closeth vp the starres, as vnder a signet.
הָ/אֹמֵ֣ר לַ֭/חֶרֶס וְ/לֹ֣א יִזְרָ֑ח וּ/בְעַ֖ד כּוֹכָבִ֣ים יַחְתֹּֽם
Which alone spreadeth out the heauens, and treadeth vpon the waues of the Sea.
GenevaHee himselfe alone spreadeth out the heauens, and walketh vpon the height of the sea.
נֹטֶ֣ה שָׁמַ֣יִם לְ/בַדּ֑/וֹ וְ֝/דוֹרֵ֗ךְ עַל בָּ֥מֳתֵי יָֽם
Which maketh Arcturus, Orion and Pleiades, and the chambers of the South.
GenevaHe maketh the starres Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the climates of the South.
עֹֽשֶׂה עָ֭שׁ כְּסִ֥יל וְ/כִימָ֗ה וְ/חַדְרֵ֥י תֵמָֽן
Which doeth great things past finding out, yea and wonders without number.
GenevaHe doeth great things, and vnsearcheable: yea, marueilous things without nomber.
עֹשֶׂ֣ה גְ֭דֹלוֹת עַד אֵ֣ין חֵ֑קֶר וְ/נִפְלָא֗וֹת עַד אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר
Loe, hee goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceiue him not.
GenevaLo, when he goeth by me, I see him not: and when he passeth by, I perceiue him not.
הֵ֤ן יַעֲבֹ֣ר עָ֭לַ/י וְ/לֹ֣א אֶרְאֶ֑ה וְ֝/יַחֲלֹ֗ף וְֽ/לֹא אָבִ֥ין לֽ/וֹ
Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say vnto him, What doest thou?
GenevaBehold, when he taketh a pray, who can make him to restore it? who shall say vnto him, What doest thou?
הֵ֣ן יַ֭חְתֹּף מִ֣י יְשִׁיבֶ֑/נּוּ מִֽי יֹאמַ֥ר אֵ֝לָ֗י/ו מַֽה תַּעֲשֶֽׂה
If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers doe stoupe vnder him.
GenevaGod will not withdrawe his anger, and the most mightie helpes doe stoupe vnder him.
אֱ֭לוֹהַּ לֹא יָשִׁ֣יב אַפּ֑/וֹ תחת/ו שָׁ֝חֲח֗וּ עֹ֣זְרֵי רָֽהַב
How much lesse shall I answere him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
GenevaHowe much lesse shall I answere him? or howe should I finde out my words with him?
אַ֭ף כִּֽי אָנֹכִ֣י אֶֽעֱנֶ֑/נּוּ אֶבְחֲרָ֖ה דְבָרַ֣/י עִמּֽ/וֹ
Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answere, but I would make supplication to my Iudge.
GenevaFor though I were iust, yet could I not answere, but I would make supplication to my Iudge.
אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִם צָ֭דַקְתִּי לֹ֣א אֶעֱנֶ֑ה לִ֝/מְשֹׁפְטִ֗/י אֶתְחַנָּֽן
If I had called, and had answered me, yet would I not beleeue that he had hearkened vnto my voice:
GenevaIf I cry, and he answere me, yet woulde I not beleeue, that he heard my voyce.
אִם קָרָ֥אתִי וַֽ/יַּעֲנֵ֑/נִי לֹֽא אַ֝אֲמִ֗ין כִּֽי יַאֲזִ֥ין קוֹלִֽ/י
For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
GenevaFor he destroyeth mee with a tempest, and woundeth me without cause.
אֲשֶׁר בִּ/שְׂעָרָ֥ה יְשׁוּפֵ֑/נִי וְ/הִרְבָּ֖ה פְצָעַ֣/י חִנָּֽם
Hee will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitternesse.
GenevaHe wil not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitternesse.
לֹֽא יִ֭תְּנֵ/נִי הָשֵׁ֣ב רוּחִ֑/י כִּ֥י יַ֝שְׂבִּעַ֗/נִי מַמְּרֹרִֽים
If I speake of strength, loe, hee is strong: and if of iudgement, who shall set me a time to pleade?
GenevaIf we speake of strength, behold, he is strog: if we speake of iudgement, who shall bring me in to pleade?
אִם לְ/כֹ֣חַ אַמִּ֣יץ הִנֵּ֑ה וְ/אִם לְ֝/מִשְׁפָּ֗ט מִ֣י יוֹעִידֵֽ/נִי
If I iustifie my selfe, mine owne mouth shall condemne me: If I say, I am perfect, it shall also prooue me peruerse.
GenevaIf I woulde iustifie my selfe, mine owne mouth shall condemne mee: if I would be perfite, he shall iudge me wicked.
אִם אֶ֭צְדָּק פִּ֣/י יַרְשִׁיעֵ֑/נִי תָּֽם אָ֝֗נִי וַֽ/יַּעְקְשֵֽׁ/נִי
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soule: I would despise my life.
GenevaThough I were perfite, yet I knowe not my soule: therefore abhorre I my life.
תָּֽם אָ֭נִי לֹֽא אֵדַ֥ע נַפְשִׁ֗/י אֶמְאַ֥ס חַיָּֽ/י
This is one thing, therefore I said it; he destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
GenevaThis is one point: therefore I said, Hee destroyeth the perfite and the wicked.
אַחַ֗ת הִ֥יא עַל כֵּ֥ן אָמַ֑רְתִּי תָּ֥ם וְ֝/רָשָׁ֗ע ה֣וּא מְכַלֶּֽה
If the scourge slay suddenly, hee will laugh at the triall of the innocent.
GenevaIf the scourge should suddenly slay, should God laugh at the punishment of the innocent?
אִם שׁ֭וֹט יָמִ֣ית פִּתְאֹ֑ם לְ/מַסַּ֖ת נְקִיִּ֣ם יִלְעָֽג
The earth is giuen into the hand of the wicked: he couereth the faces of the Iudges thereof; if not, where, and who is hee?
GenevaThe earth is giuen into the hand of ye wicked: he couereth the faces of the iudges therof: if not, where is he? or who is he?
אֶ֤רֶץ נִתְּנָ֬ה בְֽ/יַד רָשָׁ֗ע פְּנֵֽי שֹׁפְטֶ֥י/הָ יְכַסֶּ֑ה אִם לֹ֖א אֵפ֣וֹא מִי הֽוּא
Now my dayes are swifter then a Poste: they flee away, they see no good.
GenevaMy dayes haue bene more swift then a post: they haue fled, and haue seene no good thing.
וְ/יָמַ֣/י קַ֭לּוּ מִנִּי רָ֑ץ בָּֽ֝רְח֗וּ לֹא רָא֥וּ טוֹבָֽה
They are passed away as the ships: as the Eagle that hasteth to the pray.
GenevaThey are passed as with the most swift ships, and as the eagle that flyeth to the pray.
חָ֭לְפוּ עִם אֳנִיּ֣וֹת אֵבֶ֑ה כְּ֝/נֶ֗שֶׁר יָט֥וּשׂ עֲלֵי אֹֽכֶל
If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leaue off my heauinesse, and comfort my selfe.
GenevaIf I say, I wil forget my complaynt, I will cease from my wrath, and comfort mee,
אִם אָ֭מְרִ/י אֶשְׁכְּחָ֣ה שִׂיחִ֑/י אֶעֶזְבָ֖ה פָנַ֣/י וְ/אַבְלִֽיגָה
I am afraid of all my sorrowes, I know that thou wilt not holde me innocent.
GenevaThen I am afrayd of all my sorowes, knowing that thou wilt not iudge me innocent.
יָגֹ֥רְתִּי כָל עַצְּבֹתָ֑/י יָ֝דַ֗עְתִּי כִּי לֹ֥א תְנַקֵּֽ/נִי
If I be wicked, why then labour I in vaine?
GenevaIf I be wicked, why labour I thus in vaine?
אָנֹכִ֥י אֶרְשָׁ֑ע לָ/מָּה זֶּ֝֗ה הֶ֣בֶל אִיגָֽע
If I wash my selfe with snow water, and make my handes neuer so cleane:
GenevaIf I wash my selfe with snowe water, and purge mine hands most cleane,
אִם הִתְרָחַ֥צְתִּי במו שָׁ֑לֶג וַ֝/הֲזִכּ֗וֹתִי בְּ/בֹ֣ר כַּפָּֽ/י
Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine owne clothes shall abhorre me.
GenevaYet shalt thou plunge mee in the pit, and mine owne clothes shall make me filthie.
אָ֭ז בַּ/שַּׁ֣חַת תִּטְבְּלֵ֑/נִי וְ֝/תִֽעֲב֗וּ/נִי שַׂלְמוֹתָֽ/י
For he is not a man as I am, that I should answere him, and we should come together in iudgement.
GenevaFor he is not a man as I am, that I shoulde answere him, if we come together to iudgement.
כִּי לֹא אִ֣ישׁ כָּמֹ֣/נִי אֶֽעֱנֶ֑/נּוּ נָב֥וֹא יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו בַּ/מִּשְׁפָּֽט
Neither is there any dayes-man betwixt vs, that might lay his hand vpon vs both.
GenevaNeyther is there any vmpire that might lay his hand vpon vs both.
לֹ֣א יֵשׁ בֵּינֵ֣י/נוּ מוֹכִ֑יחַ יָשֵׁ֖ת יָד֣/וֹ עַל שְׁנֵֽי/נוּ
Let him take his rodde away from me, & let not his feare terrifie me:
GenevaLet him take his rod away from me, and let not his feare astonish me:
יָסֵ֣ר מֵ/עָלַ֣/י שִׁבְט֑/וֹ וְ֝/אֵמָת֗/וֹ אַֽל תְּבַעֲתַֽ/נִּי
Then would I speake, and not feare him; but it is not so with me.
GenevaThen will I speake, and feare him not: but because I am not so, I holde me still.
אַֽ֭דַבְּרָה וְ/לֹ֣א אִירָאֶ֑/נּוּ כִּ֥י לֹא כֵ֥ן אָ֝נֹכִ֗י עִמָּדִֽ/י
