Judges 8
And the men of Ephraim said vnto him, Why hast thou serued vs thus, that thou calledst vs not when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharpely.

וַ/יֹּאמְר֨וּ אֵלָ֜י/ו אִ֣ישׁ אֶפְרַ֗יִם מָֽה הַ/דָּבָ֤ר הַ/זֶּה֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֔/נוּ לְ/בִלְתִּי֙ קְרֹ֣אות לָ֔/נוּ כִּ֥י הָלַ֖כְתָּ לְ/הִלָּחֵ֣ם בְּ/מִדְיָ֑ן וַ/יְרִיב֥וּ/ן אִתּ֖/וֹ בְּ/חָזְקָֽה
And he said vnto them, What haue I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better then the vintage of Abiezer?

וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵי/הֶ֔ם מֶה עָשִׂ֥יתִי עַתָּ֖ה כָּ/כֶ֑ם הֲ/ל֗וֹא ט֛וֹב עֹלְל֥וֹת אֶפְרַ֖יִם מִ/בְצִ֥יר אֲבִיעֶֽזֶר
God hath deliuered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to doe in comparison of you? then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

בְּ/יֶדְ/כֶם֩ נָתַ֨ן אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶת שָׂרֵ֤י מִדְיָן֙ אֶת עֹרֵ֣ב וְ/אֶת זְאֵ֔ב וּ/מַה יָּכֹ֖לְתִּי עֲשׂ֣וֹת כָּ/כֶ֑ם אָ֗ז רָפְתָ֤ה רוּחָ/ם֙ מֵֽ/עָלָ֔י/ו בְּ/דַבְּר֖/וֹ הַ/דָּבָ֥ר הַ/זֶּֽה
¶ And Gideon came to Iordan, and passed ouer, hee, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

וַ/יָּבֹ֥א גִדְע֖וֹן הַ/יַּרְדֵּ֑נָ/ה עֹבֵ֣ר ה֗וּא וּ/שְׁלֹשׁ מֵא֤וֹת הָ/אִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔/וֹ עֲיֵפִ֖ים וְ/רֹדְפִֽים
And he said vnto the men of Succoth, Giue, I pray you, loaues of bread vnto the people that follow me, for they bee faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
GenevaAnd he said vnto the men of Succoth, Giue, I pray you, morsels of bread vnto the people that follow me (for they be wearie) that I may follow after Zebah, and Zalmunna Kings of Midian.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לְ/אַנְשֵׁ֣י סֻכּ֔וֹת תְּנוּ נָא֙ כִּכְּר֣וֹת לֶ֔חֶם לָ/עָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּ/רַגְלָ֑/י כִּי עֲיֵפִ֣ים הֵ֔ם וְ/אָנֹכִ֗י רֹדֵ֛ף אַחֲרֵ֛י זֶ֥בַח וְ/צַלְמֻנָּ֖ע מַלְכֵ֥י מִדְיָֽן
¶ And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hands, that wee should giue bread vnto thine armie?
GenevaAnd the princes of Succoth sayde, Are the handes of Zebah and Zalmunna nowe in thine hads, that we should giue bread vnto thine army?
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ שָׂרֵ֣י סֻכּ֔וֹת הֲ֠/כַף זֶ֧בַח וְ/צַלְמֻנָּ֛ע עַתָּ֖ה בְּ/יָדֶ֑/ךָ כִּֽי נִתֵּ֥ן לִֽ/צְבָאֲ/ךָ֖ לָֽחֶם
And Gideon said, Therfore when the LORD hath deliuered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I wil teare your flesh with the thornes of the wildernesse, and with briers.

וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר גִּדְע֔וֹן לָ/כֵ֗ן בְּ/תֵ֧ת יְהוָ֛ה אֶת זֶ֥בַח וְ/אֶת צַלְמֻנָּ֖ע בְּ/יָדִ֑/י וְ/דַשְׁתִּי֙ אֶת בְּשַׂרְ/כֶ֔ם אֶת קוֹצֵ֥י הַ/מִּדְבָּ֖ר וְ/אֶת הַֽ/בַּרְקֳנִֽים
¶ And he went vp thence to Penuel, and spake vnto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him, as the men of Succoth had answered him.

And he spake also vnto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come againe in peace, I will breake downe this towre.

¶ Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hostes with them, about fifteene thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the East: for there fell an hundred and twentie thousand men that drew sword.

וְ/זֶ֨בַח וְ/צַלְמֻנָּ֜ע בַּ/קַּרְקֹ֗ר וּ/מַחֲנֵי/הֶ֤ם עִמָּ/ם֙ כַּ/חֲמֵ֤שֶׁת עָשָׂר֙ אֶ֔לֶף כֹּ֚ל הַ/נּ֣וֹתָרִ֔ים מִ/כֹּ֖ל מַחֲנֵ֣ה בְנֵי קֶ֑דֶם וְ/הַ/נֹּ֣פְלִ֔ים מֵאָ֨ה וְ/עֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֥לֵֽף חָֽרֶב
¶ And Gideon went vp by the way of them that dwelt in tents, on the East of Nobah, and Iogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

וַ/יַּ֣עַל גִּדְע֗וֹן דֶּ֚רֶךְ הַ/שְּׁכוּנֵ֣י בָֽ/אֳהָלִ֔ים מִ/קֶּ֥דֶם לְ/נֹ֖בַח וְ/יָגְבֳּהָ֑ה וַ/יַּךְ֙ אֶת הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְ/הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶ֖ה הָ֥יָה בֶֽטַח
And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah, and Zalmunna, & discomfited all the host.

וַ/יָּנ֗וּסוּ זֶ֚בַח וְ/צַלְמֻנָּ֔ע וַ/יִּרְדֹּ֖ף אַחֲרֵי/הֶ֑ם וַ/יִּלְכֹּ֞ד אֶת שְׁנֵ֣י מַלְכֵ֣י מִדְיָ֗ן אֶת זֶ֨בַח֙ וְ/אֶת צַלְמֻנָּ֔ע וְ/כָל הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶ֖ה הֶחֱרִֽיד
¶ And Gideon the sonne of Ioash returned from battel before the Sunne was vp,

וַ/יָּ֛שָׁב גִּדְע֥וֹן בֶּן יוֹאָ֖שׁ מִן הַ/מִּלְחָמָ֑ה מִֽ/לְ/מַעֲלֵ֖ה הֶ/חָֽרֶס
And caught a yong man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described vnto him the princes of Succoth and the elders thereof, euen threescore and seuenteene men.
GenevaAnd tooke a seruant of the me of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he wrote to him the princes of Succoth and the Elders thereof, euen seuentie and seuen men.
וַ/יִּלְכָּד נַ֛עַר מֵ/אַנְשֵׁ֥י סֻכּ֖וֹת וַ/יִּשְׁאָלֵ֑/הוּ וַ/יִּכְתֹּ֨ב אֵלָ֜י/ו אֶת שָׂרֵ֤י סֻכּוֹת֙ וְ/אֶת זְקֵנֶ֔י/הָ שִׁבְעִ֥ים וְ/שִׁבְעָ֖ה אִֽישׁ
And he came vnto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did vpbraid me, saying, Are the handes of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should giue bread vnto thy men that are wearie?
GenevaAnd he came vnto the men of Succoth, and sayd, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, by whome ye vpbrayded me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in thine hands, that we should giue bread vnto thy weary men?
וַ/יָּבֹא֙ אֶל אַנְשֵׁ֣י סֻכּ֔וֹת וַ/יֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֖ה זֶ֣בַח וְ/צַלְמֻנָּ֑ע אֲשֶׁר֩ חֵרַפְתֶּ֨ם אוֹתִ֜/י לֵ/אמֹ֗ר הֲ֠/כַף זֶ֣בַח וְ/צַלְמֻנָּ֤ע עַתָּה֙ בְּ/יָדֶ֔/ךָ כִּ֥י נִתֵּ֛ן לַ/אֲנָשֶׁ֥י/ךָ הַ/יְּעֵפִ֖ים לָֽחֶם
And hee tooke the Elders of the citie, and thornes of the wildernes, and briers, and with them hee taught the men of Succoth.

וַ/יִּקַּח֙ אֶת זִקְנֵ֣י הָ/עִ֔יר וְ/אֶת קוֹצֵ֥י הַ/מִּדְבָּ֖ר וְ/אֶת הַֽ/בַּרְקֳנִ֑ים וַ/יֹּ֣דַע בָּ/הֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת אַנְשֵׁ֥י סֻכּֽוֹת
And he beat downe the towre of Penuel, and slew the men of the citie.
GenevaAlso he brake downe the towre of Penuel, and slew the men of the citie.
וְ/אֶת מִגְדַּ֥ל פְּנוּאֵ֖ל נָתָ֑ץ וַֽ/יַּהֲרֹ֖ג אֶת אַנְשֵׁ֥י הָ/עִֽיר
¶ Then said he vnto Zebah and Zalmunna, What maner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they, ech one resembled the children of a king.
GenevaThen saide he vnto Zebah and Zalmunna, What maner of men were they, whom ye slew at Tabor? and they answered, As thou art, so were they: euery one was like the children of a King.
וַ/יֹּ֗אמֶר אֶל זֶ֨בַח֙ וְ/אֶל צַלְמֻנָּ֔ע אֵיפֹה֙ הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֲרַגְתֶּ֖ם בְּ/תָב֑וֹר וַֽ/יֹּאמרוּ֙ כָּמ֣וֹ/ךָ כְמוֹ/הֶ֔ם אֶחָ֕ד כְּ/תֹ֖אַר בְּנֵ֥י הַ/מֶּֽלֶךְ
And hee said, They were my brethren, euen the sonnes of my mother: as the LORD liueth, if yee had saued them aliue, I would not slay you.

וַ/יֹּאמַ֕ר אַחַ֥/י בְּנֵֽי אִמִּ֖/י הֵ֑ם חַי יְהוָ֗ה ל֚וּ הַחֲיִתֶ֣ם אוֹתָ֔/ם לֹ֥א הָרַ֖גְתִּי אֶתְ/כֶֽם
And he said vnto Iether his first borne, Up, and slay them: but the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
GenevaThen he sayde vnto Iether his first borne sonne, Vp, and slay them: but the boy drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet yong.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לְ/יֶ֣תֶר בְּכוֹר֔/וֹ ק֖וּם הֲרֹ֣ג אוֹתָ֑/ם וְ/לֹא שָׁלַ֨ף הַ/נַּ֤עַר חַרְבּ/וֹ֙ כִּ֣י יָרֵ֔א כִּ֥י עוֹדֶ֖/נּוּ נָֽעַר
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall vpon vs: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slewe Zebah and Zalmunna, & tooke away the ornaments that were on their camels neckes.

וַ/יֹּ֜אמֶר זֶ֣בַח וְ/צַלְמֻנָּ֗ע ק֤וּם אַתָּה֙ וּ/פְגַע בָּ֔/נוּ כִּ֥י כָ/אִ֖ישׁ גְּבוּרָת֑/וֹ וַ/יָּ֣קָם גִּדְע֗וֹן וַֽ/יַּהֲרֹג֙ אֶת זֶ֣בַח וְ/אֶת צַלְמֻנָּ֔ע וַ/יִּקַּח֙ אֶת הַ/שַּׂ֣הֲרֹנִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּ/צַוְּארֵ֥י גְמַלֵּי/הֶֽם
¶ Then the men of Israel saide vnto Gideon, Rule thou ouer vs, both thou, and thy sonne, & thy sonnes sonne also: for thou hast deliuered vs from the hand of Midian.

וַ/יֹּאמְר֤וּ אִֽישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל גִּדְע֔וֹן מְשָׁל בָּ֨/נוּ֙ גַּם אַתָּ֔ה גַּם בִּנְ/ךָ֖ גַּ֣ם בֶּן בְּנֶ֑/ךָ כִּ֥י הוֹשַׁעְתָּ֖/נוּ מִ/יַּ֥ד מִדְיָֽן
And Gideon said vnto them, I will not rule ouer you, neither shall my sonne rule ouer you: the LORD shall rule ouer you.
GenevaAnd Gideon sayde vnto them, I will not reigne ouer you, neither shall my childe reigne ouer you, but the Lord shall reigne ouer you.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵ/הֶם֙ גִּדְע֔וֹן לֹֽא אֶמְשֹׁ֤ל אֲנִי֙ בָּ/כֶ֔ם וְ/לֹֽא יִמְשֹׁ֥ל בְּנִ֖/י בָּ/כֶ֑ם יְהוָ֖ה יִמְשֹׁ֥ל בָּ/כֶֽם
¶ And Gideon said vnto them, I would desire a request of you, that you would giue me euery man the earerings of his pray. For they had golden eare-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.

וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵ/הֶ֜ם גִּדְע֗וֹן אֶשְׁאֲלָ֤ה מִ/כֶּם֙ שְׁאֵלָ֔ה וּ/תְנוּ לִ֕/י אִ֖ישׁ נֶ֣זֶם שְׁלָל֑/וֹ כִּֽי נִזְמֵ֤י זָהָב֙ לָ/הֶ֔ם כִּ֥י יִשְׁמְעֵאלִ֖ים הֵֽם
And they answered, We will willingly giue them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein, euery man the earerings of his pray.

And the weight of the golden eare-rings that hee requested, was a thousand and seuen hundred shekels of gold, beside ornaments, and collars, & purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chaines that were about their camels necks.

וַ/יְהִ֗י מִשְׁקַ֞ל נִזְמֵ֤י הַ/זָּהָב֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁאָ֔ל אֶ֥לֶף וּ/שְׁבַע מֵא֖וֹת זָהָ֑ב לְ֠/בַד מִן הַ/שַּׂהֲרֹנִ֨ים וְ/הַ/נְּטִפ֜וֹת וּ/בִגְדֵ֣י הָ/אַרְגָּמָ֗ן שֶׁ/עַל֙ מַלְכֵ֣י מִדְיָ֔ן וּ/לְ/בַד֙ מִן הָ֣/עֲנָק֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּ/צַוְּארֵ֥י גְמַלֵּי/הֶֽם
And Gideon made an Ephod thereof, and put it in his citie, euen in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it; which thing became a snare vnto Gideon, and to his house.

וַ/יַּעַשׂ֩ אוֹת֨/וֹ גִדְע֜וֹן לְ/אֵפ֗וֹד וַ/יַּצֵּ֨ג אוֹת֤/וֹ בְ/עִיר/וֹ֙ בְּ/עָפְרָ֔ה וַ/יִּזְנ֧וּ כָֽל יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אַחֲרָ֖י/ו שָׁ֑ם וַ/יְהִ֛י לְ/גִדְע֥וֹן וּ/לְ/בֵית֖/וֹ לְ/מוֹקֵֽשׁ
¶ Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel; so that they lifted vp their heads no more: and the countrey was in quietnesse fourtie yeeres, in the dayes of Gideon.

וַ/יִּכָּנַ֣ע מִדְיָ֗ן לִ/פְנֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְ/לֹ֥א יָסְפ֖וּ לָ/שֵׂ֣את רֹאשָׁ֑/ם וַ/תִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הָ/אָ֛רֶץ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה בִּ/ימֵ֥י גִדְעֽוֹן
¶ And Ierubbaal the sonne of Ioash went & dwelt in his owne house.

And Gideon had threescore and ten sonnes of his body begotten: for he had many wiues.

And his concubine that was in Shechem, shee also bare him a sonne, whose name he called Abimelech.

¶ And Gideon the sonne of Ioash died, in a good olde age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Ioash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites.

וַ/יָּ֛מָת גִּדְע֥וֹן בֶּן יוֹאָ֖שׁ בְּ/שֵׂיבָ֣ה טוֹבָ֑ה וַ/יִּקָּבֵ֗ר בְּ/קֶ֨בֶר֙ יוֹאָ֣שׁ אָבִ֔י/ו בְּ/עָפְרָ֖ה אֲבִ֥י הָֽעֶזְרִֽי
And it came to passe as soone as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned againe, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-Berith their god.
