Chapter 4
James 4
From whence come warres and fightings among you? come they not hence, euen of your lusts, that warre in your members?
GenevaFrom whence are warres and contentions among you? are they not hence, euen of your pleasures, that fight in your members?
Πόθεν πόλεμοι καὶ πόθεν μάχαι ἐν ὑμῖν; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν, ἐκ τῶν ἡδονῶν ὑμῶν τῶν στρατευομένων ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν ὑμῶν;
Ye lust, and haue not: yee kill, and desire to haue, and cannot obtaine: yee fight and warre, yet yee haue not, because ye aske not.
GenevaYe lust, and haue not: ye enuie, and desire immoderately, and cannot obtaine: ye fight and warre, and get nothing, because ye aske not.
Ye aske and receiue not, because ye aske amisse, that yee may consume it vpon your lusts.
GenevaYe aske, and receiue not, because ye aske amisse, that ye might lay the same out on your pleasures.
Ye adulterers, and adulteresses, know yee not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoeuer therefore will be a friend of the world, is the enemy of God.
GenevaYe adulterers and adulteresses, knowe ye not that the amitie of the world is the enimitie of God? Whosoeuer therefore will be a friend of the world, maketh himselfe the enemie of God.
Doe ye thinke that the Scripture saith in vaine, the spirit that dwelleth in vs lusteth to enuy?
GenevaDoe ye thinke that the Scripture sayeth in vaine, The spirit that dwelleth in vs, lusteth after enuie?
ἢ δοκεῖτε ὅτι κενῶς ἡ γραφὴ λέγει· Πρὸς φθόνον ἐπιποθεῖ τὸ πνεῦμα ὃ κατῴκισεν ἐν ἡμῖν;
But he giueth more grace, wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proude, but giueth grace vnto the humble.
GenevaBut the Scripture offereth more grace, and therefore sayth, God resisteth the proude, and giueth grace to the humble.
Submit your selues therefore to God: resist the deuill, and hee will flee from you.
GenevaSubmit your selues to God: resist the deuill, and he will flee from you.
Draw nigh to God, and hee will draw nigh to you: cleanse your hands ye sinners, and purifie your hearts yee double minded.
GenevaDrawe neere to God, and he will drawe neere to you. Clense your handes, ye sinners, and purge your hearts, ye double minded.
Bee afflicted, and mourne, and weepe: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your ioy to heauinesse.
GenevaSuffer afflictions, and sorrowe ye, and weepe: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your ioy into heauinesse.
Humble your selues in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you vp.
GenevaCast downe your selues before the Lord, and he will lift you vp.
Speake not euill one of another (brethren:) he that speaketh euill of his brother, and iudgeth his brother, speaketh euill of the Law, and iudgeth the Law: but if thou iudge the Law, thou art not a doer of the Law, but a iudge.
GenevaSpeake not euill one of another, brethren. He that speaketh euill of his brother, or he that condemneth his brother, speaketh euill of ye Law, and condemneth the Lawe: and if thou condemnest the Lawe, thou art not an obseruer of the Lawe, but a iudge.
There is one Lawgiuer, who is able to saue, and to destroy: who art thou that iudgest another?
GenevaThere is one Lawgiuer, which is able to saue, and to destroy. Who art thou that iudgest another man?
εἷς ἐστιν νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής, ὁ δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι· σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ, ὁ κρίνων τὸν πλησίον;
Goe to now ye that say, To day or to morrow wee will goe into such a city and continue there a yere, and buy, and sell, and get gaine:
GenevaGoe to now ye that say, To day or to morowe we will goe into such a citie, and continue there a yeere, and bye and sell, and get gaine,
Whereas yee know not what shalbe on the morow: for what is your life? It is euen a vapour that appeareth for a litle time, and then vanisheth away.
Geneva(And yet ye cannot tell what shalbe to morowe. For what is your life? It is euen a vapour that appeareth for a litle time, and afterward vanisheth away)
For that yee ought to say, if the Lord will, we shall liue, and doe this, or that.
GenevaFor that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, and, if we liue, we will doe this or that.
But now yee reioyce in your boastings: all such reioycing is euill.
GenevaBut now ye reioyce in your boastings: all such reioycing is euill.
Therefore to him that knoweth to doe good, and doth it not, to him it is sinne.
GenevaTherefore, to him that knoweth how to doe well, and doeth it not, to him it is sinne.
