Then Ionah prayed vnto the LORD his God, out of the fishes belly,a

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction vnto the LORD, and hee heard mee; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voyce.b

For thou hadst cast mee into the deepe, in the middest of the Seas, and the floods compassed me about: all thy billowes & thy waues passed ouer me.c

Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will looke againe toward thy holy Temple.

The waters compassed mee about euen to the soule; the depth closed mee round about; the weedes were wrapt about my head.

I went downe to the bottomes of the mountaines: the earth with her barres was about me for euer: yet hast thou brought vp my life from corruption, O LORD my God.d

When my soule fainted within mee, I remembred the LORD, and my prayer came in vnto thee, into thine holy Temple.

They that obserue lying vanities, forsake their owne mercy.e f

But I wil sacrifice vnto thee with the voice of thanksgiuing, I will pay that that I haue vowed: saluation is of the LORD.

¶ And the LORD spake vnto the fish, and it vomited out Ionah vpon the drie land.

1apraied vnto the Lord Being now swallowed vp of death, and seing no remedy to escape, his faith brast out vnto the Lord, knowing yt out of the very hel he was able to deliuer him.
2bbelly of hel For he was now in the fishes belly as in a graue or place of darkenes.
3cFor thou haddest cast me This declared what his prayer was, & how he laboured betwene hope and despayre, considering the neglect of his vocation & Gods iudgements for the same: but yet in the end faith gate the victorie.
6dthou hast broght vp my life Thou hast deliuered me from the belly of the fishe & all these dangers, as it were raising me from death to life.
8eThey that wait vpon lying vanities They that depend vpon any thing saue on God alone.
8fforsake their owne mercie Thei refuse their owne felicitie & that goodnes yt they shulde els receiue of God.
