Jeremiah 38
Then Shephatiah the sonne of Mattan, and Gedaliah the sonne of Pashur and Iucal the sonne of Shelemiah, & Pashur the sonne of Malchiah heard the words that Ieremiah had spoken vnto all the people, saying,

וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֞ע שְׁפַטְיָ֣ה בֶן מַתָּ֗ן וּ/גְדַלְיָ֨הוּ֙ בֶּן פַּשְׁח֔וּר וְ/יוּכַל֙ בֶּן שֶׁ֣לֶמְיָ֔הוּ וּ/פַשְׁח֖וּר בֶּן מַלְכִּיָּ֑ה אֶ֨ת הַ/דְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר יִרְמְיָ֛הוּ מְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל כָּל הָ/עָ֖ם לֵ/אמֹֽר
Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this citie, shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he that goeth forth to the Caldeans, shall liue: for he shall haue his life for a pray, and shall liue.
GenevaThus sayth the Lord, He that remaineth in this citie, shall dye by the sworde, by the famine and by the pestilence: but hee that goeth foorth to the Caldeans, shall liue: for he shall haue his life for a praye, and shall liue.
כֹּה֮ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָה֒ הַ/יֹּשֵׁב֙ בָּ/עִ֣יר הַ/זֹּ֔את יָמ֕וּת בַּ/חֶ֖רֶב בָּ/רָעָ֣ב וּ/בַ/דָּ֑בֶר וְ/הַ/יֹּצֵ֤א אֶל הַ/כַּשְׂדִּים֙ יחיה וְ/הָיְתָה לּ֥/וֹ נַפְשׁ֛/וֹ לְ/שָׁלָ֖ל וָ/חָֽי
Thus saith the LORD, This citie shall surely be giuen into the hand of the king of Babylons armie, which shall take it.
GenevaThus sayth the Lord, This citie shall surely be giuen into the hand of the King of Babels armie, which shall take it.
כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה הִנָּתֹ֨ן תִּנָּתֵ֜ן הָ/עִ֣יר הַ/זֹּ֗את בְּ/יַ֛ד חֵ֥יל מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶ֖ל וּ/לְכָדָֽ/הּ
Therefore the princes sayd vnto the king, We beseech thee let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of warre that remaine in this citie, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words vnto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

וַ/יֹּאמְר֨וּ הַ/שָּׂרִ֜ים אֶל הַ/מֶּ֗לֶךְ י֣וּמַת נָא֮ אֶת הָ/אִ֣ישׁ הַ/זֶּה֒ כִּֽי עַל כֵּ֡ן הֽוּא מְרַפֵּ֡א אֶת יְדֵי֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י הַ/מִּלְחָמָ֜ה הַֽ/נִּשְׁאָרִ֣ים בָּ/עִ֣יר הַ/זֹּ֗את וְ/אֵת֙ יְדֵ֣י כָל הָ/עָ֔ם לְ/דַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵי/הֶ֔ם כַּ/דְּבָרִ֖ים הָ/אֵ֑לֶּה כִּ֣י הָ/אִ֣ישׁ הַ/זֶּ֗ה אֵינֶ֨/נּוּ דֹרֵ֧שׁ לְ/שָׁל֛וֹם לָ/עָ֥ם הַ/זֶּ֖ה כִּ֥י אִם לְ/רָעָֽה
Then Zedekiah the king sayd, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.
GenevaThen Zedekiah the King sayd, Behold, he is in your hands, for ye King can denie you nothing.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֔הוּ הִנֵּה ה֖וּא בְּ/יֶדְ/כֶ֑ם כִּֽי אֵ֣ין הַ/מֶּ֔לֶךְ יוּכַ֥ל אֶתְ/כֶ֖ם דָּבָֽר
Then tooke they Ieremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the sonne of Hammelech that was in the court of the prison: and they let downe Ieremiah with cords: and in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Ieremiah sunke in the mire.

וַ/יִּקְח֣וּ אֶֽת יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ וַ/יַּשְׁלִ֨כוּ אֹת֜/וֹ אֶל הַ/בּ֣וֹר מַלְכִּיָּ֣הוּ בֶן הַ/מֶּ֗לֶךְ אֲשֶׁר֙ בַּ/חֲצַ֣ר הַ/מַּטָּרָ֔ה וַ/יְשַׁלְּח֥וּ אֶֽת יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ בַּ/חֲבָלִ֑ים וּ/בַ/בּ֤וֹר אֵֽין מַ֨יִם֙ כִּ֣י אִם טִ֔יט וַ/יִּטְבַּ֥ע יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ בַּ/טִּֽיט
¶ Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of þ eunuches which was in the kings house, heard that they had put Ieremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Beniamin)

וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֡ע עֶֽבֶד מֶ֨לֶךְ הַ/כּוּשִׁ֜י אִ֣ישׁ סָרִ֗יס וְ/הוּא֙ בְּ/בֵ֣ית הַ/מֶּ֔לֶךְ כִּֽי נָתְנ֥וּ אֶֽת יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ אֶל הַ/בּ֑וֹר וְ/הַ/מֶּ֥לֶךְ יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּ/שַׁ֥עַר בִּנְיָמִֽן
Ebed-melech went foorth out of the kings house, and spake to the king, saying,

וַ/יֵּצֵ֥א עֶֽבֶד מֶ֖לֶךְ מִ/בֵּ֣ית הַ/מֶּ֑לֶךְ וַ/יְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל הַ/מֶּ֖לֶךְ לֵ/אמֹֽר
My lord the king, these men haue done euill in all that they haue done to Ieremiah the Prophet, whom they haue cast into the dungeon, and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is, for there is no more bread in the city.

אֲדֹנִ֣/י הַ/מֶּ֗לֶךְ הֵרֵ֜עוּ הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֤ים הָ/אֵ֨לֶּה֙ אֵ֣ת כָּל אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשׂוּ֙ לְ/יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַ/נָּבִ֔יא אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר הִשְׁלִ֖יכוּ אֶל הַ/בּ֑וֹר וַ/יָּ֤מָת תַּחְתָּי/ו֙ מִ/פְּנֵ֣י הָֽ/רָעָ֔ב כִּ֣י אֵ֥ין הַ/לֶּ֛חֶם ע֖וֹד בָּ/עִֽיר
Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirtie men with thee, and take vp Ieremiah the Prophet out of the dungeon before he die.

וַ/יְצַוֶּ֣ה הַ/מֶּ֔לֶךְ אֵ֛ת עֶֽבֶד מֶ֥לֶךְ הַ/כּוּשִׁ֖י לֵ/אמֹ֑ר קַ֣ח בְּ/יָדְ/ךָ֤ מִ/זֶּה֙ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְֽ/הַעֲלִ֜יתָ אֶֽת יִרְמְיָ֧הוּ הַ/נָּבִ֛יא מִן הַ/בּ֖וֹר בְּ/טֶ֥רֶם יָמֽוּת
So Ebed-melech tooke the men with him, and went into the house of the king vnder the treasurie, and tooke thence old cast cloutes, and old rotten ragges, and let them downe by cordes into the dungeon to Ieremiah.

וַ/יִּקַּ֣ח עֶֽבֶד מֶ֨לֶךְ אֶת הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֜ים בְּ/יָד֗/וֹ וַ/יָּבֹ֤א בֵית הַ/מֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ אֶל תַּ֣חַת הָ/אוֹצָ֔ר וַ/יִּקַּ֤ח מִ/שָּׁם֙ בְּלוֹיֵ֣ ה/סחבות וּ/בְלוֹיֵ֖ מְלָחִ֑ים וַ/יְשַׁלְּחֵ֧/ם אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֛הוּ אֶל הַ/בּ֖וֹר בַּ/חֲבָלִֽים
And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said vnto Ieremiah, Put now these old cast cloutes and rotten ragges vnder thine arme-holes, vnder the cordes. And Ieremiah did so.

וַ/יֹּ֡אמֶר עֶבֶד מֶ֨לֶךְ הַ/כּוּשִׁ֜י אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ שִׂ֣ים נָ֠א בְּלוֹאֵ֨י הַ/סְּחָב֤וֹת וְ/הַ/מְּלָחִים֙ תַּ֚חַת אַצִּל֣וֹת יָדֶ֔י/ךָ מִ/תַּ֖חַת לַ/חֲבָלִ֑ים וַ/יַּ֥עַשׂ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ כֵּֽן
So they drew vp Ieremiah with cordes, and tooke him vp out of the dungeon, and Ieremiah remained in the court of the prison.

וַ/יִּמְשְׁכ֤וּ אֶֽת יִרְמְיָ֨הוּ֙ בַּֽ/חֲבָלִ֔ים וַ/יַּעֲל֥וּ אֹת֖/וֹ מִן הַ/בּ֑וֹר וַ/יֵּ֣שֶׁב יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ בַּ/חֲצַ֖ר הַ/מַּטָּרָֽה
¶ Then Zedekiah the king sent, and tooke Ieremiah the Prophet vnto him into the third entrie that is in the house of the LORD, and the king said vnto Ieremiah, I will aske thee a thing: hide nothing from me.

וַ/יִּשְׁלַ֞ח הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֗הוּ וַ/יִּקַּ֞ח אֶֽת יִרְמְיָ֤הוּ הַ/נָּבִיא֙ אֵלָ֔י/ו אֶל מָבוֹא֙ הַ/שְּׁלִישִׁ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּ/בֵ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר הַ/מֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ שֹׁאֵ֨ל אֲנִ֤י אֹֽתְ/ךָ֙ דָּבָ֔ר אַל תְּכַחֵ֥ד מִמֶּ֖/נִּי דָּבָֽר
Then Ieremiah said vnto Zedekiah, If I declare it vnto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I giue thee counsell, wilt thou not hearken vnto me?
GenevaThen Ieremiah sayd to Zedekiah, If I declare it vnto thee, wilt not thou slay me? and if I giue thee counsell, thou wilt not heare me.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר יִרְמְיָ֨הוּ֙ אֶל צִדְקִיָּ֔הוּ כִּ֚י אַגִּ֣יד לְ/ךָ֔ הֲ/ל֖וֹא הָמֵ֣ת תְּמִיתֵ֑/נִי וְ/כִי֙ אִיעָ֣צְ/ךָ֔ לֹ֥א תִשְׁמַ֖ע אֵלָֽ/י
So the king sware secretly vnto Ieremiah, saying, As the LORD liueth that made vs this soule, I wil not put thee to death, neither will I giue thee into the hand of these men that seeke thy life.

וַ/יִּשָּׁבַ֞ע הַ/מֶּ֧לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֛הוּ אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ בַּ/סֵּ֣תֶר לֵ/אמֹ֑ר חַי יְהוָ֞ה את אֲשֶׁר֩ עָשָׂה לָ֨/נוּ אֶת הַ/נֶּ֤פֶשׁ הַ/זֹּאת֙ אִם אֲמִיתֶ֔/ךָ וְ/אִם אֶתֶּנְ/ךָ֗ בְּ/יַד֙ הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֣ים הָ/אֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר מְבַקְשִׁ֖ים אֶת נַפְשֶֽׁ/ךָ
Then said Ieremiah vnto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD the God of hostes, the God of Israel, If thou wilt assuredly goe foorth vnto the king of Babylons Princes, then thy soule shall liue, and this Citie shall not be burnt with fire, and thou shalt liue, and thine house.

וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ אֶל צִדְקִיָּ֡הוּ כֹּֽה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָה֩ אֱלֹהֵ֨י צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אִם יָצֹ֨א תֵצֵ֜א אֶל שָׂרֵ֤י מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ וְ/חָיְתָ֣ה נַפְשֶׁ֔/ךָ וְ/הָ/עִ֣יר הַ/זֹּ֔את לֹ֥א תִשָּׂרֵ֖ף בָּ/אֵ֑שׁ וְ/חָיִ֖תָה אַתָּ֥ה וּ/בֵיתֶֽ/ךָ
But if thou wilt not goe foorth to the king of Babylons Princes, then shall this City be giuen into the hand of the Caldeans, and they shall burne it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

וְ/אִ֣ם לֹֽא תֵצֵ֗א אֶל שָׂרֵי֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל וְ/נִתְּנָ֞ה הָ/עִ֤יר הַ/זֹּאת֙ בְּ/יַ֣ד הַ/כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים וּ/שְׂרָפ֖וּ/הָ בָּ/אֵ֑שׁ וְ/אַתָּ֖ה לֹֽא תִמָּלֵ֥ט מִ/יָּדָֽ/ם
And Zedekiah the king said vnto Ieremiah, I am afraid of the Iewes that are fallen to the Caldeans, lest they deliuer mee into their hand, and they mocke me.
GenevaAnd Zedekiah the King sayde vnto Ieremiah, I am carefull for the Iewes that are fled vnto the Caldeans, least they deliuer mee into their hands, and they mocke me.
וַ/יֹּ֛אמֶר הַ/מֶּ֥לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֖הוּ אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֑הוּ אֲנִ֧י דֹאֵ֣ג אֶת הַ/יְּהוּדִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָֽפְלוּ֙ אֶל הַ/כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים פֶּֽן יִתְּנ֥וּ אֹתִ֛/י בְּ/יָדָ֖/ם וְ/הִתְעַלְּלוּ בִֽ/י
But Ieremiah said, They shall not deliuer thee: obey, I beseech thee, the voyce of the LORD, which I speake vnto thee: so it shall be well vnto thee, and thy soule shall liue.
GenevaBut Ieremiah sayd, They shall not deliuer thee: hearken vnto the voyce of the Lord, I beseech thee, which I speake vnto thee: so shall it be well vnto thee, and thy soule shall liue.
וַ/יֹּ֥אמֶר יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ לֹ֣א יִתֵּ֑נוּ שְֽׁמַֽע נָ֣א בְּ/ק֣וֹל יְהוָ֗ה לַ/אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֲנִי֙ דֹּבֵ֣ר אֵלֶ֔י/ךָ וְ/יִ֥יטַב לְ/ךָ֖ וּ/תְחִ֥י נַפְשֶֽׁ/ךָ
But if thou refuse to goe foorth, this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me.
GenevaBut if thou wilt refuse to go forth, this is the worde that the Lord hath shewed me.
וְ/אִם מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לָ/צֵ֑את זֶ֣ה הַ/דָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִרְאַ֖/נִי יְהוָֽה
And behold, all the women that are left in the king of Iudahs house, shalbe brought forth to the king of Babylons Princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends haue set thee on, and haue preuailed against thee: thy feet are sunke in the mire, and they are turned away backe.
GenevaAnd beholde, all the women that are left in the King of Iudahs house, shalbe brought forth to the King of Babels princes: and those women shall say, Thy friends haue perswaded thee, and haue preuailed against thee: thy feete are fastened in the myre, and they are turned backe.
וְ/הִנֵּ֣ה כָל הַ/נָּשִׁ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר נִשְׁאֲרוּ֙ בְּ/בֵ֣ית מֶֽלֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה מוּצָא֕וֹת אֶל שָׂרֵ֖י מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֑ל וְ/הֵ֣נָּה אֹמְר֗וֹת הִסִּית֜וּ/ךָ וְ/יָכְל֤וּ לְ/ךָ֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י שְׁלֹמֶ֔/ךָ הָטְבְּע֥וּ בַ/בֹּ֛ץ רַגְלֶ֖/ךָ נָסֹ֥גוּ אָחֽוֹר
So they shall bring out all thy wiues, and thy children to the Caldeans, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the King of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this citie to be burnt with fire.

וְ/אֶת כָּל נָשֶׁ֣י/ךָ וְ/אֶת בָּנֶ֗י/ךָ מֽוֹצִאִים֙ אֶל הַ/כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים וְ/אַתָּ֖ה לֹא תִמָּלֵ֣ט מִ/יָּדָ֑/ם כִּ֣י בְ/יַ֤ד מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ תִּתָּפֵ֔שׂ וְ/אֶת הָ/עִ֥יר הַ/זֹּ֖את תִּשְׂרֹ֥ף בָּ/אֵֽשׁ
¶ Then said Zedekiah vnto Ieremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר צִדְקִיָּ֜הוּ אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ אִ֛ישׁ אַל יֵדַ֥ע בַּ/דְּבָֽרִים הָ/אֵ֖לֶּה וְ/לֹ֥א תָמֽוּת
But if the Princes heare that I haue talked with thee, and they come vnto thee, and say vnto thee, Declare vnto vs now what thou hast said vnto the king; hide it not from vs, and wee wil not put thee to death; also what the king said vnto thee:
GenevaBut if ye princes vnderstand that I haue talked with thee, and they come vnto thee, and say vnto thee, Declare vnto vs nowe, what thou hast sayde vnto the King, hide it not from vs, and we will not slay thee: also what the King sayd vnto thee,
וְ/כִֽי יִשְׁמְע֣וּ הַ/שָּׂרִים֮ כִּֽי דִבַּ֣רְתִּי אִתָּ/ךְ֒ וּ/בָ֣אוּ אֵלֶ֣י/ךָ וְֽ/אָמְר֪וּ אֵלֶ֟י/ךָ הַגִּֽידָ/ה נָּ֨א לָ֜/נוּ מַה דִּבַּ֧רְתָּ אֶל הַ/מֶּ֛לֶךְ אַל תְּכַחֵ֥ד מִמֶּ֖/נּוּ וְ/לֹ֣א נְמִיתֶ֑/ךָ וּ/מַה דִּבֶּ֥ר אֵלֶ֖י/ךָ הַ/מֶּֽלֶךְ
Then thou shalt say vnto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to returne to Ionathans house to die there.
GenevaThen shalt thou say vnto them, I humbly besought the King that he would not cause me to returne to Iehonathans house, to die there.
וְ/אָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵי/הֶ֔ם מַפִּיל אֲנִ֥י תְחִנָּתִ֖/י לִ/פְנֵ֣י הַ/מֶּ֑לֶךְ לְ/בִלְתִּ֧י הֲשִׁיבֵ֛/נִי בֵּ֥ית יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן לָ/מ֥וּת שָֽׁם
Then came all the Princes vnto Ieremiah, and asked him, and he told them according to all these words, that the king had commanded: so they left off speaking with him, for the matter was not perceiued.

וַ/יָּבֹ֨אוּ כָל הַ/שָּׂרִ֤ים אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֨הוּ֙ וַ/יִּשְׁאֲל֣וּ אֹת֔/וֹ וַ/יַּגֵּ֤ד לָ/הֶם֙ כְּ/כָל הַ/דְּבָרִ֣ים הָ/אֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖ה הַ/מֶּ֑לֶךְ וַ/יַּחֲרִ֣שׁוּ מִמֶּ֔/נּוּ כִּ֥י לֹֽא נִשְׁמַ֖ע הַ/דָּבָֽר
So Ieremiah abode in the court of the prison, vntill the day that Ierusalem was taken, and hee was there when Ierusalem was taken.
