Proverbs 17

Better is a drie morsell, and quietnesse therewith; then an house full of sacrifices with strife.

GenevaBetter is a dry morsell, if peace be with it, then an house full of sacrifices with strife.

ט֤וֹב פַּ֣ת חֲ֭רֵבָה וְ/שַׁלְוָה בָ֑/הּ מִ֝/בַּ֗יִת מָלֵ֥א זִבְחֵי רִֽיב

A wise seruant shall haue rule ouer a son that causeth shame: and shall haue part of the inheritance among the brethren.

GenevaA discrete seruant shall haue rule ouer a lewde sonne, and hee shall deuide the heritage among the brethren.

עֶֽבֶד מַשְׂכִּ֗יל יִ֭מְשֹׁל בְּ/בֵ֣ן מֵבִ֑ישׁ וּ/בְ/ת֥וֹךְ אַ֝חִ֗ים יַחֲלֹ֥ק נַחֲלָֽה

The fining pot is for siluer, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.

GenevaAs is the fining pot for siluer, and the fornace for golde, so the Lord trieth the heartes.

מַצְרֵ֣ף לַ֭/כֶּסֶף וְ/כ֣וּר לַ/זָּהָ֑ב וּ/בֹחֵ֖ן לִבּ֣וֹת יְהוָֽה

A wicked doer giueth heed to false lips: and a liar giueth eare to a naughtie tongue.

GenevaThe wicked giueth heed to false lippes, and a lyer hearkeneth to the naughtie tongue.

מֵ֭רַע מַקְשִׁ֣יב עַל שְׂפַת אָ֑וֶן שֶׁ֥קֶר מֵ֝זִין עַל לְשׁ֥וֹן הַוֺּֽת

Whoso mocketh the poore, reproacheth his maker: and he that is glad at calamities, shall not be vnpunished.

GenevaHee that mocketh the poore, reprocheth him, that made him: and he that reioyceth at destruction, shall not be vnpunished.

לֹעֵ֣ג לָ֭/רָשׁ חֵרֵ֣ף עֹשֵׂ֑/הוּ שָׂמֵ֥חַ לְ֝/אֵ֗יד לֹ֣א יִנָּקֶֽה

Childrens children are the crowne of old men: and the glory of children are their fathers.

GenevaChildres children are the crowne of the elders: and the glory of ye children are their fathers.

עֲטֶ֣רֶת זְ֭קֵנִים בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֑ים וְ/תִפְאֶ֖רֶת בָּנִ֣ים אֲבוֹתָֽ/ם

Excellent speech becommeth not a foole: much lesse doe lying lippes a prince.

GenevaHie talke becommeth not a foole, much lesse a lying talke a prince.

לֹא נָאוָ֣ה לְ/נָבָ֣ל שְׂפַת יֶ֑תֶר אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי לְ/נָדִ֥יב שְׂפַת שָֽׁקֶר

A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoeuer it turneth, it prospereth.

GenevaA rewarde is as a stone pleasant in the eyes of them that haue it: it prospereth, whithersoeuer it turneth.

אֶֽבֶן חֵ֣ן הַ֭/שֹּׁחַד בְּ/עֵינֵ֣י בְעָלָ֑י/ו אֶֽל כָּל אֲשֶׁ֖ר יִפְנֶ֣ה יַשְׂכִּֽיל

He that couereth a transgression, seeketh loue; but he that repeateth a matter, separateth very friends.

GenevaHee that couereth a transgression, seeketh loue: but hee that repeateth a matter, separateth the prince.

מְֽכַסֶּה פֶּ֭שַׁע מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אַהֲבָ֑ה וְ/שֹׁנֶ֥ה בְ֝/דָבָ֗ר מַפְרִ֥יד אַלּֽוּף

A reproofe entreth more into a wise man, then an hundred stripes into a foole.

GenevaA reproofe entereth more into him that hath vnderstanding, then an hundreth stripes into a foole.

תֵּ֣חַת גְּעָרָ֣ה בְ/מֵבִ֑ין מֵ/הַכּ֖וֹת כְּסִ֣יל מֵאָֽה

An euill man seeketh onely rebellion; therefore a cruell messenger shall be sent against him.

GenevaA sedicious person seeketh onely euill, and a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

אַךְ מְרִ֥י יְבַקֶּשׁ רָ֑ע וּ/מַלְאָ֥ךְ אַ֝כְזָרִ֗י יְשֻׁלַּח בּֽ/וֹ

Let a beare robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather then a foole in his folly.

GenevaIt is better for a man to meete a beare robbed of her whelpes, then a foole in his follie.

פָּג֬וֹשׁ דֹּ֣ב שַׁכּ֣וּל בְּ/אִ֑ישׁ וְ/אַל כְּ֝סִ֗יל בְּ/אִוַּלְתּֽ/וֹ

Whoso rewardeth euill for good, euill shall not depart from his house.

GenevaHe that rewardeth euil for good, euil shall not depart from his house.

מֵשִׁ֣יב רָ֭עָה תַּ֣חַת טוֹבָ֑ה לֹא תמיש רָ֝עָ֗ה מִ/בֵּיתֽ/וֹ

The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therfore leaue off contention, before it be medled with.

פּ֣וֹטֵֽר מַ֭יִם רֵאשִׁ֣ית מָד֑וֹן וְ/לִ/פְנֵ֥י הִ֝תְגַּלַּ֗ע הָ/רִ֥יב נְטֽוֹשׁ

He that iustifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the iust: euen they both are abomination to the LORD.

מַצְדִּ֣יק רָ֭שָׁע וּ/מַרְשִׁ֣יעַ צַדִּ֑יק תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת יְ֝הוָ֗ה גַּם שְׁנֵי/הֶֽם

Wherfore is there a price in the hand of a foole to get wisedome, seeing he hath no heart to it?

לָ/מָּה זֶּ֣ה מְחִ֣יר בְּ/יַד כְּסִ֑יל לִ/קְנ֖וֹת חָכְמָ֣ה וְ/לֶב אָֽיִן

A friend loueth at all times, and a brother is borne for aduersitie.

בְּ/כָל עֵ֭ת אֹהֵ֣ב הָ/רֵ֑עַ וְ/אָ֥ח לְ֝/צָרָ֗ה יִוָּלֵֽד

A man void of vnderstanding striketh hands, and becommeth suretie in the presence of his friend.

GenevaA man destitute of vnderstanding, toucheth the hande, and becommeth suretie for his neighbour.

אָדָ֣ם חֲסַר לֵ֭ב תּוֹקֵ֣עַ כָּ֑ף עֹרֵ֥ב עֲ֝רֻבָּ֗ה לִ/פְנֵ֥י רֵעֵֽ/הוּ

He loueth transgression, that loueth strife: and he that exalteth his gate, seeketh destruction.

אֹ֣הֵֽב פֶּ֭שַׁע אֹהֵ֣ב מַצָּ֑ה מַגְבִּ֥יהַּ פִּ֝תְח֗/וֹ מְבַקֶּשׁ שָֽׁבֶר

He that hath a froward heart, findeth no good, and he that hath a peruerse tongue, falleth into mischiefe.

עִקֶּשׁ לֵ֭ב לֹ֣א יִמְצָא ט֑וֹב וְ/נֶהְפָּ֥ךְ בִּ֝/לְשׁוֹנ֗/וֹ יִפּ֥וֹל בְּ/רָעָֽה

He that begetteth a foole, doth it to his sorrow: and the father of a foole hath no ioy.

GenevaHe that begetteth a foole, getteth himselfe sorow, and the father of a foole can haue no ioy.

יֹלֵ֣ד כְּ֭סִיל לְ/ת֣וּגָה ל֑/וֹ וְ/לֹֽא יִ֝שְׂמַ֗ח אֲבִ֣י נָבָֽל

A merrie heart doth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

GenevaA ioyfull heart causeth good health: but a sorowfull minde dryeth the bones.

לֵ֣ב שָׂ֭מֵחַ יֵיטִ֣ב גֵּהָ֑ה וְ/ר֥וּחַ נְ֝כֵאָ֗ה תְּיַבֶּשׁ גָּֽרֶם

A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosome, to peruert the wayes of iudgement.

GenevaA wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosome to wrest the wayes of iudgement.

שֹׁ֣חַד מֵ֭/חֵיק רָשָׁ֣ע יִקָּ֑ח לְ֝/הַטּ֗וֹת אָרְח֥וֹת מִשְׁפָּֽט

Wisedome is before him that hath vnderstanding: but the eyes of a foole are in the ends of the earth.

GenevaWisdome is in the face of him that hath vnderstanding: but the eyes of a foole are in the corners of the world.

אֶת פְּנֵ֣י מֵבִ֣ין חָכְמָ֑ה וְ/עֵינֵ֥י כְ֝סִ֗יל בִּ/קְצֵה אָֽרֶץ

A foolish sonne is a griefe to his father, & bitternes to her that bare him.

GenevaA foolish sonne is a griefe vnto his father, and a heauines to her that bare him.

כַּ֣עַס לְ֭/אָבִי/ו בֵּ֣ן כְּסִ֑יל וּ֝/מֶ֗מֶר לְ/יוֹלַדְתּֽ/וֹ

Also to punish the iust is not good, nor to strike princes for equitie.

GenevaSurely it is not good to condemne the iust, nor that ye princes should smite such for equitie.

גַּ֤ם עֲנ֣וֹשׁ לַ/צַּדִּ֣יק לֹא ט֑וֹב לְ/הַכּ֖וֹת נְדִיבִ֣ים עַל יֹֽשֶׁר

He that hath knowledge, spareth his words: and a man of vnderstanding is of an excellent spirit.

חוֹשֵׂ֣ךְ אֲ֭מָרָי/ו יוֹדֵ֣עַ דָּ֑עַת ו/קר ר֝֗וּחַ אִ֣ישׁ תְּבוּנָֽה

Euen a foole, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips, is esteemed a man of vnderstanding.

GenevaEuen a foole (when he holdeth his peace) is counted wise, and hee that stoppeth his lips, prudent.

גַּ֤ם אֱוִ֣יל מַ֭חֲרִישׁ חָכָ֣ם יֵחָשֵׁ֑ב אֹטֵ֖ם שְׂפָתָ֣י/ו נָבֽוֹן
