Chapter 3
Romans 3
What aduantage then hath the Iew? or what profit is there of Circumcision?
Geneva 1599What is then the preferment of the Iewe? or what is the profite of circumcision?
Τί οὖν τὸ περισσὸν τοῦ Ἰουδαίου, ἢ τίς ἡ ὠφέλεια τῆς περιτομῆς;
Much euery way: chiefly, because that vnto them were committed the Oracles of God.
Geneva 1599Much euery maner of way: for chiefly, because vnto them were of credite committed the oracles of God.
For what if some did not beleeue? shall their vnbeliefe make the faith of God without effect?
Geneva 1599For what, though some did not beleeue? shall their vnbeliefe make the faith of God without effect?
τί γάρ; εἰ ἠπίστησάν τινες, μὴ ἡ ἀπιστία αὐτῶν τὴν πίστιν τοῦ θεοῦ καταργήσει;
God forbid: yea, let God be true, but euery man a lier, as it is written, That thou mightest be iustified in thy sayings, and mightest ouercome when thou art iudged.
Geneva 1599God forbid: yea, let God be true, and euery man a lyar, as it is written, That thou mightest be iustified in thy words, and ouercome, when thou art iudged.
But if our vnrighteousnesse commend the righteousnesse of God, what shall we say? is God vnrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speake as a man)
Geneva 1599Now if our vnrighteousnes comend the righteousnes of God, what shall we say? Is God vnrighteous which punisheth? (I speake as a man.)
God forbid: for then how shall God iudge the world?
Geneva 1599God forbid: els how shall God iudge ye world?
μὴ γένοιτο· ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον;
For if the trueth of God hath more abounded through my lye vnto his glory; why yet am I also iudged as a sinner?
Geneva 1599For if the veritie of God hath more abounded through my lye vnto his glorie, why am I yet condemned as a sinner?
And not rather as wee be slanderously reported, and as some affirme that we say, Let vs doe euill, that good may come: whose damnation is iust.
Geneva 1599And (as we are blamed, and as some affirme, that we say) why doe we not euil, that good may come thereof? whose damnation is iust.
What then? are wee better then they? No in no wise: for we haue before proued both Iewes, and Gentiles, that they are all vnder sinne,
Geneva 1599What then? are we more excellent? No, in no wise: for we haue alreadie prooued, that all, both Iewes and Gentiles are vnder sinne,
As it is written, There is none righteous, no not one:
Geneva 1599As it is written, There is none righteous, no not one.
There is none that vnderstandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Geneva 1599There is none that vnderstandeth: there is none that seeketh God.
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become vnprofitable, there is none that doeth good, no not one.
Geneva 1599They haue all gone out of the way: they haue bene made altogether vnprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no not one.
Their throat is an open sepulchre, with their tongues they haue vsed deceit, the poyson of Aspes is vnder their lippes:
Geneva 1599Their throte is an open sepulchre: they haue vsed their tongues to deceit: the poyson of aspes is vnder their lippes.
Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitternesse:
Geneva 1599Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitternesse.
Their feet are swift to shed blood.
Geneva 1599Their feete are swift to shead blood.
Destruction & misery are in their wayes:
Geneva 1599Destruction and calamity are in their waies,
And the way of peace haue they not knowen.
Geneva 1599And ye way of peace they haue not knowen.
There is no feare of God before their eyes.
Geneva 1599The feare of God is not before their eies.
Now we know that what things soeuer the Law saith, it saith to them who are vnder the Law: that euery mouth may bee stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Geneva 1599Now we know that whatsoeuer ye Lawe saieth, it saieth it to them which are vnder ye Law, that euery mouth may bee stopped, and all the world be subiect to the iudgement of God.
Therefore by the deedes of the Law, there shall no flesh be iustified in his sight: for by the Law is the knowledge of sinne.
Geneva 1599Therefore by the woorkes of the Lawe shall no flesh be iustified in his sight: for by the Lawe commeth the knowledge of sinne.
But nowe the righteousnesse of God without the Lawe is manifested, being witnessed by the Lawe and the Prophets.
Geneva 1599But nowe is the righteousnesse, of God made manifest without the Lawe, hauing witnes of the Lawe and of the Prophets,
Euen the righteousnesse of God, which is by faith of Iesus Christ vnto all, and vpon all them that beleeue: for there is no difference:
Geneva 1599To wit, the righteousnesse of God by the faith of Iesus Christ, vnto all, and vpon all that beleeue.
For all haue sinned, and come short of the glory of God,
Geneva 1599For there is no difference: for all haue sinned, and are depriued of the glorie of God,
Being iustified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Iesus Christ:
Geneva 1599And are iustified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Iesus,
Whom God hath set forth to bee a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousnesse for the remission of sinnes, that are past, through the forbearance of God.
Geneva 1599Whom God hath set forth to be a reconciliation through faith in his blood to declare his righteousnes, by the forgiuenesse of the sinnes that are passed,
To declare, I say, at this time his righteousnesse: that hee might bee iust, and the iustifier of him which beleeueth in Iesus.
Geneva 1599Through the patience of God, to shewe at this time his righteousnesse, that hee might be iust, and a iustifier of him which is of the faith of Iesus.
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what Law? Of works? Nay: but by the Law of faith.
Geneva 1599Where is then the reioycing? It is excluded. By what Lawe? of woorkes? Nay: but by the Lawe of faith.
Therefore wee conclude, that a man is iustified by faith, without the deeds of the Law.
Geneva 1599Therefore we conclude, that a man is iustified by faith, without the workes of the Lawe.
Is he the God of the Iewes only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
Geneva 1599God, is he the God of the Iewes onely, and not of the Gentiles also? Yes, euen of the Gentiles also.
Seeing it is one God which shal iustifie the circumcision by faith, and vncircumcision through faith.
Geneva 1599For it is one God, who shall iustifie circumcision of faith, and vncircumcision through faith.
Doe we then make void the lawe through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the Law.
Geneva 1599Doe we then make the Lawe of none effect through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the Lawe.
