Isaiah 28
Woe to the crowne of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flowre, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are ouercome with wine.
GenevaWoe to the crowne of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim: for his glorious beautie shall be a fading flowre, which is vpon the head of the valley of them that be fat, and are ouercome with wine.
ה֗וֹי עֲטֶ֤רֶת גֵּאוּת֙ שִׁכֹּרֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם וְ/צִ֥יץ נֹבֵ֖ל צְבִ֣י תִפְאַרְתּ֑/וֹ אֲשֶׁ֛ר עַל רֹ֥אשׁ גֵּֽיא שְׁמָנִ֖ים הֲל֥וּמֵי יָֽיִן
Behold, the Lord hath a mightie and strong one, which as a tempest of haile and a destroying storme, as a flood of mightie waters ouerflowing, shall cast downe to the earth with the hand.
GenevaBeholde, the Lord hath a mightie and strong hoste, like a tempest of haile, and a whirlewinde that ouerthroweth, like a tempest of mightie waters that ouerflowe, which throwe to the ground mightily.
הִנֵּ֨ה חָזָ֤ק וְ/אַמִּץ֙ לַֽ/אדֹנָ֔/י כְּ/זֶ֥רֶם בָּרָ֖ד שַׂ֣עַר קָ֑טֶב כְּ֠/זֶרֶם מַ֣יִם כַּבִּירִ֥ים שֹׁטְפִ֛ים הִנִּ֥יחַ לָ/אָ֖רֶץ בְּ/יָֽד
The crowne of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim shall be troden vnder feete.
GenevaThey shall be troden vnder foote, euen the crowne and the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim.
בְּ/רַגְלַ֖יִם תֵּֽרָמַ֑סְנָה עֲטֶ֥רֶת גֵּא֖וּת שִׁכּוֹרֵ֥י אֶפְרָֽיִם
And the glorious beautie which is on the head of the fat valley, shall bee a fading flowre, and as the hastie fruite before the summer: which when he that looketh vpon it, seeth it, while it is yet in his hand, he eateth it vp.
GenevaFor his glorious beautie shall be a fading floure, which is vpon the head of the valley of them that be fatte, and as the hastie fruite afore sommer, which when hee that looketh vpon it, seeth it, while it is in his hand, he eateth it.
וְֽ/הָ֨יְתָ֜ה צִיצַ֤ת נֹבֵל֙ צְבִ֣י תִפְאַרְתּ֔/וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל רֹ֖אשׁ גֵּ֣יא שְׁמָנִ֑ים כְּ/בִכּוּרָהּ֙ בְּ/טֶ֣רֶם קַ֔יִץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִרְאֶ֤ה הָֽ/רֹאֶה֙ אוֹתָ֔/הּ בְּ/עוֹדָ֥/הּ בְּ/כַפּ֖/וֹ יִבְלָעֶֽ/נָּה
¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crowne of glory, and for a diademe of beautie vnto the residue of his people:

בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/ה֗וּא יִֽהְיֶה֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת לַ/עֲטֶ֣רֶת צְבִ֔י וְ/לִ/צְפִירַ֖ת תִּפְאָרָ֑ה לִ/שְׁאָ֖ר עַמּֽ/וֹ
And for a spirit of iudgement to him that sitteth in iudgement, and for strength to them that turne the battell to the gate.
GenevaAnd for a spirite of iudgement to him that sitteth in iudgement, and for strength vnto them that turne away the battell to the gate.
וּ/לְ/ר֖וּחַ מִשְׁפָּ֑ט לַ/יּוֹשֵׁב֙ עַל הַ/מִּשְׁפָּ֔ט וְ/לִ֨/גְבוּרָ֔ה מְשִׁיבֵ֥י מִלְחָמָ֖ה שָֽׁעְרָ/ה
¶ But they also haue erred through wine, and through strong drinke are out of the way: the priest and the prophet haue erred through strong drinke, they are swallowed vp of wine: they are out of the way through strong drinke, they erre in vision, they stumble in iudgement.
GenevaBut they haue erred because of wine, and are out of the way by strong drinke: the priest and the prophet haue erred by strong drinke: they are swallowed vp with wine: they haue gone astraye through strong drinke: they faile in vision: they stumble in iudgement.
וְ/גַם אֵ֨לֶּה֙ בַּ/יַּ֣יִן שָׁג֔וּ וּ/בַ/שֵּׁכָ֖ר תָּע֑וּ כֹּהֵ֣ן וְ/נָבִיא֩ שָׁג֨וּ בַ/שֵּׁכָ֜ר נִבְלְע֣וּ מִן הַ/יַּ֗יִן תָּעוּ֙ מִן הַ/שֵּׁכָ֔ר שָׁגוּ֙ בָּֽ/רֹאֶ֔ה פָּק֖וּ פְּלִילִיָּֽה
For all tables are full of vomite and filthinesse, so that there is no place cleane.
GenevaFor all their tables are full of filthy vomiting: no place is cleane.
כִּ֚י כָּל שֻׁלְחָנ֔וֹת מָלְא֖וּ קִ֣יא צֹאָ֑ה בְּלִ֖י מָקֽוֹם
¶ Whome shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to vnderstand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milke, and drawen from the breasts.

אֶת מִי֙ יוֹרֶ֣ה דֵעָ֔ה וְ/אֶת מִ֖י יָבִ֣ין שְׁמוּעָ֑ה גְּמוּלֵי֙ מֵֽ/חָלָ֔ב עַתִּיקֵ֖י מִ/שָּׁדָֽיִם
For precept must be vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vpon line, line vpon line, here a litle, and there a litle.
GenevaFor precept must be vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vnto line, line vnto line, there a litle, and there a litle.
כִּ֣י צַ֤ו לָ/צָו֙ צַ֣ו לָ/צָ֔ו קַ֥ו לָ/קָ֖ו קַ֣ו לָ/קָ֑ו זְעֵ֥יר שָׁ֖ם זְעֵ֥יר שָֽׁם
For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speake to this people.
GenevaFor with a stammering tongue and with a strange language shall he speake vnto this people.
כִּ֚י בְּ/לַעֲגֵ֣י שָׂפָ֔ה וּ/בְ/לָשׁ֖וֹן אַחֶ֑רֶת יְדַבֵּ֖ר אֶל הָ/עָ֥ם הַ/זֶּֽה
To whom he said, This is the rest wherwith ye may cause the weary to rest, and this is the refreshing, yet they would not heare.
GenevaVnto whome hee saide, This is the rest: giue rest to him that is weary: and this is the refreshing, but they would not heare.
אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמַ֣ר אֲלֵי/הֶ֗ם זֹ֤את הַ/מְּנוּחָה֙ הָנִ֣יחוּ לֶֽ/עָיֵ֔ף וְ/זֹ֖את הַ/מַּרְגֵּעָ֑ה וְ/לֹ֥א אָב֖וּא שְׁמֽוֹעַ
But the word of the LORD was vnto them, precept vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vpon line, line vpon line, here a litle and there a litle: that they might goe and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
GenevaTherefore shall the worde of the Lord be vnto them precept vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vnto line, line vnto line, there a litle and there a litle, that they may goe, and fall backward, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
וְ/הָיָ֨ה לָ/הֶ֜ם דְּבַר יְהוָ֗ה צַ֣ו לָ/צָ֞ו צַ֤ו לָ/צָו֙ קַ֤ו לָ/קָו֙ קַ֣ו לָ/קָ֔ו זְעֵ֥יר שָׁ֖ם זְעֵ֣יר שָׁ֑ם לְמַ֨עַן יֵלְכ֜וּ וְ/כָשְׁל֤וּ אָחוֹר֙ וְ/נִשְׁבָּ֔רוּ וְ/נוֹקְשׁ֖וּ וְ/נִלְכָּֽדוּ
¶ Wherefore heare the worde of the LORD, yee scornefull men, that rule this people which is in Ierusalem.

לָ/כֵ֛ן שִׁמְע֥וּ דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה אַנְשֵׁ֣י לָצ֑וֹן מֹֽשְׁלֵי֙ הָ/עָ֣ם הַ/זֶּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּ/ירוּשָׁלִָֽם
Because ye haue said, Wee haue made a couenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement, when the ouerflowing scourge shall passe thorow, it shall not come vnto vs: for wee haue made lies our refuge, and vnder falsehood haue we hid our selues:

כִּ֣י אֲמַרְתֶּ֗ם כָּרַ֤תְנֽוּ בְרִית֙ אֶת מָ֔וֶת וְ/עִם שְׁא֖וֹל עָשִׂ֣ינוּ חֹזֶ֑ה שיט שׁוֹטֵ֤ף כִּֽי עבר לֹ֣א יְבוֹאֵ֔/נוּ כִּ֣י שַׂ֧מְנוּ כָזָ֛ב מַחְסֵ֖/נוּ וּ/בַ/שֶּׁ֥קֶר נִסְתָּֽרְנוּ
¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Beholde, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, a tryed stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: hee that beleeueth, shall not make haste.
GenevaTherefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will laye in Zion a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation. Hee that beleeueth, shall not make haste.
לָ/כֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֔ה הִנְ/נִ֛י יִסַּ֥ד בְּ/צִיּ֖וֹן אָ֑בֶן אֶ֣בֶן בֹּ֜חַן פִּנַּ֤ת יִקְרַת֙ מוּסָ֣ד מוּסָּ֔ד הַֽ/מַּאֲמִ֖ין לֹ֥א יָחִֽישׁ
Iudgement also will I lay to the line, and righteousnesse to the plummet: and the haile shall sweepe away the refuge of lyes, and the waters shall ouerflow the hiding place.
GenevaIudgement also will I laye to the rule, and righteousnesse to the balance, and the haile shall sweepe away the vaine confidence, and the waters shall ouerflowe the secret place.
וְ/שַׂמְתִּ֤י מִשְׁפָּט֙ לְ/קָ֔ו וּ/צְדָקָ֖ה לְ/מִשְׁקָ֑לֶת וְ/יָעָ֤ה בָרָד֙ מַחְסֵ֣ה כָזָ֔ב וְ/סֵ֥תֶר מַ֖יִם יִשְׁטֹֽפוּ
¶ And your couenant with death shalbe disanulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the ouerflowing scourge shall passe thorough, then yee shalbe troden downe by it.
GenevaAnd your couenant with death shalbe disanulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand: when a scourge shall runne ouer and passe through, then shall ye be trode downe by it.
וְ/כֻפַּ֤ר בְּרִֽיתְ/כֶם֙ אֶת מָ֔וֶת וְ/חָזוּתְ/כֶ֥ם אֶת שְׁא֖וֹל לֹ֣א תָק֑וּם שׁ֤וֹט שׁוֹטֵף֙ כִּ֣י יַֽעֲבֹ֔ר וִ/הְיִ֥יתֶם ל֖/וֹ לְ/מִרְמָֽס
From the time that it goeth forth, it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it passe ouer, by day and by night, and it shalbe a vexation, onely to vnderstand the report.
GenevaWhen it passeth ouer, it shall take you away: for it shall passe through euery morning in the day, and in the night, and there shalbe onely feare to make you to vnderstand the hearing.
מִ/דֵּ֤י עָבְר/וֹ֙ יִקַּ֣ח אֶתְ/כֶ֔ם כִּֽי בַ/בֹּ֧קֶר בַּ/בֹּ֛קֶר יַעֲבֹ֖ר בַּ/יּ֣וֹם וּ/בַ/לָּ֑יְלָה וְ/הָיָ֥ה רַק זְוָעָ֖ה הָבִ֥ין שְׁמוּעָֽה
For the bed is shorter, then that a man can stretch himselfe on it: and the couering narrower, then that he can wrap himselfe in it.
GenevaFor the bed is streight that it can not suffice, and the couering narowe that one can not wrappe himselfe.
כִּֽי קָצַ֥ר הַ/מַּצָּ֖ע מֵֽ/הִשְׂתָּרֵ֑עַ וְ/הַ/מַּסֵּכָ֥ה צָ֖רָה כְּ/הִתְכַּנֵּֽס
For the LORD shall rise vp as in mount Perazim, he shalbe wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may doe his worke, his strange worke; and bring to passe his act, his strange act.
GenevaFor the Lord shall stand as in mount Perazim: hee shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his worke, his strage worke, and bring to passe his acte, his strange acte.
כִּ֤י כְ/הַר פְּרָצִים֙ יָק֣וּם יְהוָ֔ה כְּ/עֵ֖מֶק בְּ/גִבְע֣וֹן יִרְגָּ֑ז לַ/עֲשׂ֤וֹת מַעֲשֵׂ֨/הוּ֙ זָ֣ר מַעֲשֵׂ֔/הוּ וְ/לַֽ/עֲבֹד֙ עֲבֹ֣דָת֔/וֹ נָכְרִיָּ֖ה עֲבֹדָתֽ/וֹ
Now therefore be yee not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I haue heard from the Lord GOD of hostes a consumption euen determined vpon the whole earth.
GenevaNowe therefore be no mockers, least your bondes increase: for I haue heard of the Lord of hostes a consumption, euen determined vpon the whole earth.
וְ/עַתָּה֙ אַל תִּתְלוֹצָ֔צוּ פֶּֽן יֶחְזְק֖וּ מֽוֹסְרֵי/כֶ֑ם כִּֽי כָלָ֨ה וְ/נֶחֱרָצָ֜ה שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי מֵ/אֵ֨ת אֲדֹנָ֧/י יְהוִ֛ה צְבָא֖וֹת עַל כָּל הָ/אָֽרֶץ
¶ Giue yee eare, and heare my voyce, hearken and heare my speach.
GenevaHearken ye, and heare my voyce: hearken ye, and heare my speach.
הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ וְ/שִׁמְע֖וּ קוֹלִ֑/י הַקְשִׁ֥יבוּ וְ/שִׁמְע֖וּ אִמְרָתִֽ/י
Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and breake the clods of his ground?
GenevaDoeth the plowe man plowe all the day, to sowe? doeth he open, and breake the clots of his ground?
הֲ/כֹ֣ל הַ/יּ֔וֹם יַחֲרֹ֥שׁ הַ/חֹרֵ֖שׁ לִ/זְרֹ֑עַ יְפַתַּ֥ח וִֽ/ישַׂדֵּ֖ד אַדְמָתֽ/וֹ
When hee hath made plaine the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principall wheate, and the appointed barly and the rye in their place?
GenevaWhen he hath made it plaine, wil he not then sowe the fitches, and sowe cummin, and cast in wheat by measure, and the appointed barly and rye in their place?
הֲ/לוֹא֙ אִם שִׁוָּ֣ה פָנֶ֔י/הָ וְ/הֵפִ֥יץ קֶ֖צַח וְ/כַמֹּ֣ן יִזְרֹ֑ק וְ/שָׂ֨ם חִטָּ֤ה שׂוֹרָה֙ וּ/שְׂעֹרָ֣ה נִסְמָ֔ן וְ/כֻסֶּ֖מֶת גְּבֻלָתֽ/וֹ
For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.
GenevaFor his God doeth instruct him to haue discretion, and doeth teach him.
וְ/יִסְּר֥/וֹ לַ/מִּשְׁפָּ֖ט אֱלֹהָ֥י/ו יוֹרֶֽ/נּוּ
For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheele turned about vpon the cummin: but the fitches are beaten out with a staffe, and the cummin with a rodde.

כִּ֣י לֹ֤א בֶֽ/חָרוּץ֙ י֣וּדַשׁ קֶ֔צַח וְ/אוֹפַ֣ן עֲגָלָ֔ה עַל כַּמֹּ֖ן יוּסָּ֑ב כִּ֧י בַ/מַּטֶּ֛ה יֵחָ֥בֶט קֶ֖צַח וְ/כַמֹּ֥ן בַּ/שָּֽׁבֶט
Bread corne is bruised; because he will not euer be threshing it, nor breake it with the wheele of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.
GenevaBread corne when it is threshed, hee doeth not alway thresh it, neither doeth the wheele of his cart still make a noyse, neither will he breake it with the teeth thereof.
לֶ֣חֶם יוּדָ֔ק כִּ֛י לֹ֥א לָ/נֶ֖צַח אָד֣וֹשׁ יְדוּשֶׁ֑/נּוּ וְ֠/הָמַם גִּלְגַּ֧ל עֶגְלָת֛/וֹ וּ/פָרָשָׁ֖י/ו לֹֽא יְדֻקֶּֽ/נּוּ
This also commeth forth from the LORD of hostes, which is wonderfull in counsell, and excellent in working.

גַּם זֹ֕את מֵ/עִ֛ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת יָצָ֑אָה הִפְלִ֣יא עֵצָ֔ה הִגְדִּ֖יל תּוּשִׁיָּֽה
