Proverbs 20
Wine is a mocker, strong drinke is raging: and whosoeuer is deceiued thereby, is not wise.

לֵ֣ץ הַ֭/יַּין הֹמֶ֣ה שֵׁכָ֑ר וְ/כָל שֹׁ֥גֶה בּ֝֗/וֹ לֹ֣א יֶחְכָּֽם
The feare of a king, is as the roaring of a Lion: who so prouoketh him to anger, sinneth against his owne soule.
GenevaThe feare of the King is like the roaring of a lyon: hee that prouoketh him vnto anger, sinneth against his owne soule.
נַ֣הַם כַּ֭/כְּפִיר אֵ֣ימַת מֶ֑לֶךְ מִ֝תְעַבְּר֗/וֹ חוֹטֵ֥א נַפְשֽׁ/וֹ
It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but euery foole will be medling.

כָּב֣וֹד לָ֭/אִישׁ שֶׁ֣בֶת מֵ/רִ֑יב וְ/כָל אֱ֝וִ֗יל יִתְגַּלָּֽע
The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he begge in haruest, and haue nothing.
GenevaThe slouthfull will not plowe, because of winter: therefore shall he beg in sommer, but haue nothing.
מֵ֭/חֹרֶף עָצֵ֣ל לֹא יַחֲרֹ֑שׁ ישאל בַּ/קָּצִ֣יר וָ/אָֽיִן
Counsell in the heart of man is like deepe water: but a man of vnderstanding will draw it out.
GenevaThe counsell in the heart of man is like deepe waters: but a man that hath vnderstanding, will drawe it out.
מַ֣יִם עֲ֭מֻקִּים עֵצָ֣ה בְ/לֶב אִ֑ישׁ וְ/אִ֖ישׁ תְּבוּנָ֣ה יִדְלֶֽ/נָּה
Most men will proclaime euery one his owne goodnes: but a faithfull man who can finde?
GenevaMany men wil boast, euery one of his owne goodnes: but who can finde a faithfull man?
רָב אָדָ֗ם יִ֭קְרָא אִ֣ישׁ חַסְדּ֑/וֹ וְ/אִ֥ישׁ אֱ֝מוּנִ֗ים מִ֣י יִמְצָֽא
The iust man walketh in his integritie: his children are blessed after him.
GenevaHe that walketh in his integritie, is iust: and blessed shall his children be after him.
מִתְהַלֵּ֣ךְ בְּ/תֻמּ֣/וֹ צַדִּ֑יק אַשְׁרֵ֖י בָנָ֣י/ו אַחֲרָֽי/ו
A king that sitteth in the throne of iudgement, scattereth away all euill with his eyes.
GenevaA King that sitteth in the throne of iudgement, chaseth away all euill with his eyes.
מֶ֗לֶךְ יוֹשֵׁ֥ב עַל כִּסֵּא דִ֑ין מְזָרֶ֖ה בְ/עֵינָ֣י/ו כָּל רָֽע
Who can say, I haue made my heart cleane, I am pure from my sinne?
GenevaWho can say, I haue made mine heart cleane, I am cleane from my sinne?
מִֽי יֹ֭אמַר זִכִּ֣יתִי לִבִּ֑/י טָ֝הַ֗רְתִּי מֵ/חַטָּאתִֽ/י
Diuers weights, and diuers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.
GenevaDiuers weightes, and diuers measures, both these are euen abomination vnto the Lord.
אֶ֣בֶן וָ֭/אֶבֶן אֵיפָ֣ה וְ/אֵיפָ֑ה תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת יְ֝הוָ֗ה גַּם שְׁנֵי/הֶֽם
Euen a childe is knowen by his doings, whether his worke be pure, and whether it be right.
GenevaA childe also is knowen by his doings, whether his worke be pure and right.
גַּ֣ם בְּ֭/מַעֲלָלָי/ו יִתְנַכֶּר נָ֑עַר אִם זַ֖ךְ וְ/אִם יָשָׁ֣ר פָּעֳלֽ/וֹ
The hearing eare, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made euen both of them.
GenevaThe Lord hath made both these, euen the eare to heare, and the eye to see.
אֹ֣זֶן שֹׁ֭מַעַת וְ/עַ֣יִן רֹאָ֑ה יְ֝הוָ֗ה עָשָׂ֥ה גַם שְׁנֵי/הֶֽם
Loue not sleepe, lest thou come to pouertie: open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

אַל תֶּֽאֱהַ֣ב שֵׁ֭נָה פֶּן תִּוָּרֵ֑שׁ פְּקַ֖ח עֵינֶ֣י/ךָ שְֽׂבַֽע לָֽחֶם
It is nought, it is nought (saith the buyer:) but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
GenevaIt is naught, it is naught, sayth the buyer: but when he is gone apart, he boasteth.
רַ֣ע רַ֭ע יֹאמַ֣ר הַ/קּוֹנֶ֑ה וְ/אֹזֵ֥ל ל֝֗/וֹ אָ֣ז יִתְהַלָּֽל
There is gold, and a multitude of Rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious iewell.
GenevaThere is golde, and a multitude of precious stones: but the lips of knowledge are a precious iewel.
יֵ֣שׁ זָ֭הָב וְ/רָב פְּנִינִ֑ים וּ/כְלִ֥י יְ֝קָ֗ר שִׂפְתֵי דָֽעַת
Take his garment that is suerty for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
GenevaTake his garment, that is suretie for a stranger, and a pledge of him for the stranger.
לְֽקַח בִּ֭גְד/וֹ כִּי עָ֣רַב זָ֑ר וּ/בְעַ֖ד נכרים חַבְלֵֽ/הוּ
Bread of deceit is sweet to a man: but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with grauell.
GenevaThe bread of deceit is sweete to a man: but afterward his mouth shalbe filled with grauel.
עָרֵ֣ב לָ֭/אִישׁ לֶ֣חֶם שָׁ֑קֶר וְ֝/אַחַ֗ר יִמָּֽלֵא פִ֥י/הוּ חָצָֽץ
Euery purpose is established by counsell: and with good aduice make warre.
GenevaEstablish the thoughtes by counsell: and by counsell make warre.
מַ֭חֲשָׁבוֹת בְּ/עֵצָ֣ה תִכּ֑וֹן וּ֝/בְ/תַחְבֻּל֗וֹת עֲשֵׂ֣ה מִלְחָמָֽה
He that goeth about as a tale-bearer, reueileth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lippes.
GenevaHe that goeth about as a slanderer, discouereth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
גּֽוֹלֶה סּ֭וֹד הוֹלֵ֣ךְ רָכִ֑יל וּ/לְ/פֹתֶ֥ה שְׂ֝פָתָ֗י/ו לֹ֣א תִתְעָרָֽב
Who so curseth his father or his mother, his lampe shall be put out in obscure darkenesse.
GenevaHe that curseth his father or his mother, his light shalbe put out in obscure darkenes.
מְ֭קַלֵּל אָבִ֣י/ו וְ/אִמּ֑/וֹ יִֽדְעַ֥ךְ נֵ֝ר֗/וֹ ב/אישון חֹֽשֶׁךְ
An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning: but the ende thereof shall not be blessed.
GenevaAn heritage is hastely gotten at the beginning, but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
נַ֭חֲלָה מבחלת בָּ/רִאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְ֝/אַחֲרִיתָ֗/הּ לֹ֣א תְבֹרָֽךְ
Say not thou, I will recompence euil: but wait on the LORD, and he shall saue thee.
GenevaSay not thou, I wil recompense euill: but waite vpon the Lord, and he shall saue thee.
אַל תֹּאמַ֥ר אֲשַׁלְּמָה רָ֑ע קַוֵּ֥ה לַֽ֝/יהוָ֗ה וְ/יֹ֣שַֽׁע לָֽ/ךְ
Diuers waights are an abomination vnto the LORD: and a false ballance is not good.
GenevaDiuers weightes are an abomination vnto the Lord, and deceitful balances are not good.
תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה אֶ֣בֶן וָ/אָ֑בֶן וּ/מֹאזְנֵ֖י מִרְמָ֣ה לֹא טֽוֹב
Mans goings are of the LORD; how can a man then vnderstand his owne way?
GenevaThe steps of man are ruled by the Lord: how can a man then vnderstand his owne way?
מֵ/יהוָ֥ה מִצְעֲדֵי גָ֑בֶר וְ֝/אָדָ֗ם מַה יָּבִ֥ין דַּרְכּֽ/וֹ
It is a snare to the man who deuoureth that which is holy: and after vowes, to make inquirie.
GenevaIt is a destruction for a man to deuoure that which is sanctified, and after the vowes to inquire.
מוֹקֵ֣שׁ אָ֭דָם יָ֣לַע קֹ֑דֶשׁ וְ/אַחַ֖ר נְדָרִ֣ים לְ/בַקֵּֽר
A wise king scattereth the wicked, & bringeth the wheele ouer them.
GenevaA wise King scattereth the wicked, and causeth the wheele to turne ouer them.
מְזָרֶ֣ה רְ֭שָׁעִים מֶ֣לֶךְ חָכָ֑ם וַ/יָּ֖שֶׁב עֲלֵי/הֶ֣ם אוֹפָֽן
The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
GenevaThe light of the Lord is the breath of man, and searcheth all the bowels of the belly.
נֵ֣ר יְ֭הוָה נִשְׁמַ֣ת אָדָ֑ם חֹ֝פֵ֗שׂ כָּל חַדְרֵי בָֽטֶן
Mercy and trueth preserue the king: and his throne is vpholden by mercy.
GenevaMercie and trueth preserue the King: for his throne shall be established with mercie.
חֶ֣סֶד וֶ֭/אֱמֶת יִצְּרוּ מֶ֑לֶךְ וְ/סָעַ֖ד בַּ/חֶ֣סֶד כִּסְאֽ/וֹ
The glory of yong men is their strength: and the beautie of old men is the gray head.
GenevaThe beautie of yong men is their strength, and the glory of the aged is the gray head.
תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת בַּחוּרִ֣ים כֹּחָ֑/ם וַ/הֲדַ֖ר זְקֵנִ֣ים שֵׂיבָֽה
The blewnes of a wound cleanseth away euill: so doe stripes the inward parts of the belly.
GenevaThe blewnes of the wound serueth to purge the euill, and the stripes within the bowels of the belly.
חַבֻּר֣וֹת פֶּ֭צַע תמריק בְּ/רָ֑ע וּ֝/מַכּ֗וֹת חַדְרֵי בָֽטֶן
