Proverbs 22

A Good name is rather to be chosen then great riches, and louing fauour rather then siluer & golde.

GenevaA good name is to be chosen aboue great riches, and louing fauour is aboue siluer and aboue golde.

נִבְחָ֣ר שֵׁ֭ם מֵ/עֹ֣שֶׁר רָ֑ב מִ/כֶּ֥סֶף וּ֝/מִ/זָּהָ֗ב חֵ֣ן טֽוֹב

The rich and poore meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.

GenevaThe rich and poore meete together: the Lord is the maker of them all.

עָשִׁ֣יר וָ/רָ֣שׁ נִפְגָּ֑שׁוּ עֹשֵׂ֖ה כֻלָּ֣/ם יְהוָֽה

A prudent man foreseeth the euill, and hideth himselfe: but the simple passe on, and are punished.

GenevaA prudent man seeth the plague, and hideth himselfe: but the foolish goe on still, and are punished.

עָר֤וּם רָאָ֣ה רָעָ֣ה ו/יסתר וּ֝/פְתָיִ֗ים עָבְר֥וּ וְֽ/נֶעֱנָֽשׁוּ

By humilitie and the feare of the LORD, are riches, and honour, and life.

GenevaThe rewarde of humilitie, and the feare of God is riches, and glory, and life.

עֵ֣קֶב עֲ֭נָוָה יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה עֹ֖שֶׁר וְ/כָב֣וֹד וְ/חַיִּֽים

Thornes and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doeth keepe his soule, shalbe farre from them.

GenevaThornes and snares are in the way of the frowarde: but he that regardeth his soule, will depart farre from them.

צִנִּ֣ים פַּ֭חִים בְּ/דֶ֣רֶךְ עִקֵּ֑שׁ שׁוֹמֵ֥ר נַ֝פְשׁ֗/וֹ יִרְחַ֥ק מֵ/הֶֽם

Traine vp a childe in the way he should goe: and when he is olde, hee will not depart from it.

GenevaTeache a childe in the trade of his way, and when he is olde, he shall not depart from it.

חֲנֹ֣ךְ לַ֭/נַּעַר עַל פִּ֣י דַרְכּ֑/וֹ גַּ֥ם כִּֽי יַ֝זְקִ֗ין לֹֽא יָס֥וּר מִמֶּֽ/נָּה

The rich ruleth ouer the poore, and the borrower is seruant to the lender.

GenevaThe rich ruleth the poore, and the borower is seruant to the man that lendeth.

עָ֭שִׁיר בְּ/רָשִׁ֣ים יִמְשׁ֑וֹל וְ/עֶ֥בֶד לֹ֝וֶ֗ה לְ/אִ֣ישׁ מַלְוֶֽה

Hee that soweth iniquitie, shall reape vanitie: and the rodde of his anger shall faile.

GenevaHe that soweth iniquitie, shall reape affliction, and the rodde of his anger shall faile.

זוֹרֵ֣עַ עַ֭וְלָה יקצור אָ֑וֶן וְ/שֵׁ֖בֶט עֶבְרָת֣/וֹ יִכְלֶֽה

Hee that hath a bountifull eye, shall bee blessed: for hee giueth of his bread to the poore.

GenevaHe that hath a good eye, he shalbe blessed: for he giueth of his bread vnto the poore.

טֽוֹב עַ֭יִן ה֣וּא יְבֹרָ֑ךְ כִּֽי נָתַ֖ן מִ/לַּחְמ֣/וֹ לַ/דָּֽל

Cast out the scorner, and contention shall goe out; yea strife, and reproch shall cease.

GenevaCast out the scorner, and strife shall go out: so contention and reproche shall cease.

גָּ֣רֵֽשׁ לֵ֭ץ וְ/יֵצֵ֣א מָד֑וֹן וְ֝/יִשְׁבֹּ֗ת דִּ֣ין וְ/קָלֽוֹן

He that loueth purenesse of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

GenevaHee that loueth purenesse of heart for the grace of his lippes, the King shalbe his friend.

אֹהֵ֥ב טהור לֵ֑ב חֵ֥ן שְׂ֝פָתָ֗י/ו רֵעֵ֥/הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ

The eyes of the LORD preserue knowledge, and he ouerthroweth the words of the transgressour.

GenevaThe eyes of the Lord preserue knowledge: but hee ouerthroweth the wordes of the transgressour.

עֵינֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה נָ֣צְרוּ דָ֑עַת וַ֝/יְסַלֵּ֗ף דִּבְרֵ֥י בֹגֵֽד

The slothfull man sayth, There is a lyon without, I shall be slaine in the streetes.

GenevaThe slouthfull man saith, A lyon is without, I shall be slaine in the streete.

אָמַ֣ר עָ֭צֵל אֲרִ֣י בַ/ח֑וּץ בְּ/ת֥וֹךְ רְ֝חֹב֗וֹת אֵֽרָצֵֽחַ

The mouth of strange women is a deepe pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.

GenevaThe mouth of strage women is as a deepe pit: he with whom the Lord is angry, shall fall therein.

שׁוּחָ֣ה עֲ֭מֻקָּה פִּ֣י זָר֑וֹת זְע֥וּם יְ֝הוָ֗ה יפול שָֽׁם

Foolishnesse is bound in the heart of a child: but the rod of correction shal driue it farre from him.

GenevaFoolishnesse is bounde in the heart of a childe: but the rodde of correction shall driue it away from him.

אִ֭וֶּלֶת קְשׁוּרָ֣ה בְ/לֶב נָ֑עַר שֵׁ֥בֶט מ֝וּסָ֗ר יַרְחִיקֶ֥/נָּה מִמֶּֽ/נּוּ

Hee that oppresseth the poore to increase his riches, and he that giueth to the rich, shall surely come to want.

GenevaHee that oppresseth the poore to increase him selfe, and giueth vnto the riche, shall surely come to pouertie.

עֹ֣שֵֽׁק דָּ֭ל לְ/הַרְבּ֣וֹת ל֑/וֹ נֹתֵ֥ן לְ֝/עָשִׁ֗יר אַךְ לְ/מַחְסֽוֹר

Bow downe thine eare, and heare the words of the wise, and apply thine heart vnto my knowledge.

GenevaIncline thine eare, and heare the wordes of the wise, and apply thine heart vnto my knowledge.

הַ֥ט אָזְנְ/ךָ֗ וּ֭/שְׁמַע דִּבְרֵ֣י חֲכָמִ֑ים וְ֝/לִבְּ/ךָ֗ תָּשִׁ֥ית לְ/דַעְתִּֽ/י

For it is a pleasant thing, if thou keepe them within thee; they shall withall be fitted in thy lippes.

GenevaFor it shalbe pleasant, if thou keepe them in thy bellie, and if they be directed together in thy lippes.

כִּֽי נָ֭עִים כִּֽי תִשְׁמְרֵ֣/ם בְּ/בִטְנֶ֑/ךָ יִכֹּ֥נוּ יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו עַל שְׂפָתֶֽי/ךָ

That thy trust may bee in the LORD, I haue made knowen to thee this day, euen to thee.

GenevaThat thy confidence may be in the Lord, I haue shewed thee this day: thou therefore take heede.

לִ/הְי֣וֹת בַּ֭/יהוָה מִבְטַחֶ֑/ךָ הוֹדַעְתִּ֖י/ךָ הַ/יּ֣וֹם אַף אָֽתָּה

Haue not I written to thee excellent things in counsailes and knowledge:

GenevaHaue not I written vnto thee three times in counsels and knowledge,

הֲ/לֹ֤א כָתַ֣בְתִּי לְ֭/ךָ שלשום בְּ/מ֖וֹעֵצֹ֣ת וָ/דָֽעַת

That I might make thee knowe the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answere the words of trueth to them that send vnto thee?

GenevaThat I might shewe thee the assurance of the wordes of trueth to answere the wordes of trueth to them that sende to thee?

לְ/הוֹדִֽיעֲ/ךָ֗ קֹ֭שְׁטְ אִמְרֵ֣י אֱמֶ֑ת לְ/הָשִׁ֥יב אֲמָרִ֥ים אֱ֝מֶ֗ת לְ/שֹׁלְחֶֽי/ךָ

Rob not the poore because he is poore, neither oppresse the afflicted in the gate.

GenevaRobbe not the poore, because hee is poore, neither oppresse the afflicted in iudgement.

אַֽל תִּגְזָל דָּ֭ל כִּ֣י דַל ה֑וּא וְ/אַל תְּדַכֵּ֖א עָנִ֣י בַ/שָּֽׁעַר

For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoile the soule of those that spoiled them.

GenevaFor the Lord will defende their cause, and spoyle the soule of those that spoyle them.

כִּֽי יְ֭הוָה יָרִ֣יב רִיבָ֑/ם וְ/קָבַ֖ע אֶת קֹבְעֵי/הֶ֣ם נָֽפֶשׁ

Make no friendship with an angrie man: and with a furious man thou shalt not goe;

GenevaMake no friendship with an angrie man, neither goe with the furious man,

אַל תִּ֭תְרַע אֶת בַּ֣עַל אָ֑ף וְ/אֶת אִ֥ישׁ חֵ֝מוֹת לֹ֣א תָבֽוֹא

Lest thou learne his wayes, and get a snare to thy soule.

GenevaLeast thou learne his wayes, and receiue destruction to thy soule.

פֶּן תֶּאֱלַ֥ף ארחת/ו וְ/לָקַחְתָּ֖ מוֹקֵ֣שׁ לְ/נַפְשֶֽׁ/ךָ

Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.

GenevaBe not thou of them that touch the hand, nor among them that are suretie for debts.

אַל תְּהִ֥י בְ/תֹֽקְעֵי כָ֑ף בַּ֝/עֹרְבִ֗ים מַשָּׁאֽוֹת

If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from vnder thee?

GenevaIf thou hast nothing to paye, why causest thou that he should take thy bed from vnder thee?

אִם אֵֽין לְ/ךָ֥ לְ/שַׁלֵּ֑ם לָ֥/מָּה יִקַּ֥ח מִ֝שְׁכָּבְ/ךָ֗ מִ/תַּחְתֶּֽי/ךָ

Remoue not the ancient land marke, which thy fathers haue set.

GenevaThou shalt not remooue the ancient bounds which thy fathers haue made.

אַל תַּ֭סֵּג גְּב֣וּל עוֹלָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עָשׂ֣וּ אֲבוֹתֶֽי/ךָ

Seest thou a man diligent in his businesse? hee shall stand before kings, he shall not stand before meane men.

GenevaThou seest that a diligent man in his businesse standeth before Kings, and standeth not before the base sort.

חָזִ֡יתָ אִ֤ישׁ מָ֘הִ֤יר בִּ/מְלַאכְתּ֗/וֹ לִֽ/פְנֵֽי מְלָכִ֥ים יִתְיַצָּ֑ב בַּל יִ֝תְיַצֵּב לִ/פְנֵ֥י חֲשֻׁכִּֽים
