Chapter 11
Romans 11
I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbidde. For I also am an Israelite of the seede of Abraham, of the tribe of Beniamin.
GenevaI Demaund then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid: for I also am an Israelite, of the seede of Abraham, of the tribe of Beniamin.
God hath not cast away his people which hee foreknew. Wote yee not what the Scripture saieth of Elias? how hee maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,
GenevaGod hath not cast away his people which he knew before. Know ye not what the Scripture sayth of Elias, howe hee communeth with God against Israel, saying,
οὐκ ἀπώσατο ὁ θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ὃν προέγνω. ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε ἐν Ἠλίᾳ τί λέγει ἡ γραφή, ὡς ἐντυγχάνει τῷ θεῷ κατὰ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ;
Lord, they haue killed thy Prophets, and digged downe thine Altars, and I am left alone, and they seeke my life.
GenevaLord, they haue killed thy Prophets, and digged downe thine altars: and I am left alone, and they seeke my life?
But what saieth the answere of God vnto him? I haue reserued to my selfe seuen thousand men, who haue not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
GenevaBut what saith the answere of God to him? I haue reserued vnto my selfe seuen thousand men, which haue not bowed the knee to Baal.
Euen so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
GenevaEuen so then at this present time is there a remnant according to the election of grace.
And if by grace, then is it no more of workes: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it bee of workes, then is it no more grace, otherwise worke is no more worke.
GenevaAnd if it be of grace, it is no more of workes: or els were grace no more grace: but if it be of workes, it is no more grace: or els were worke no more worke.
What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for, but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded,
GenevaWhat then? Israel hath not obtained that he sought: but the election hath obteined it, and the rest haue bene hardened,
According as it is written, God hath giuen them the spirit of slumber: eyes that they should not see, and eares that they should not heare vnto this day.
GenevaAccording as it is written, God hath giuen them the spirit of slumber: eyes that they should not see, and eares that they should not heare vnto this day.
And Dauid sayth, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling blocke, and a recompense vnto them.
GenevaAnd Dauid sayth, Let their table be made a snare, and a net, and a stumbling blocke, euen for a recompence vnto them.
Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow downe their backe alway.
GenevaLet their eyes be darkened that they see not, and bowe downe their backe alwayes.
I say then; Haue they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid. But rather through their fall, saluation is come vnto the Gentiles, for to prouoke them to ielousie.
GenevaI demaund then, Haue they stumbled, that they should fall? God forbid: but through their fall, saluation commeth vnto the Gentiles, to prouoke them to follow them.
Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them, the riches of the Gentiles: how much more their fulnesse?
GenevaWherefore if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles, how much more shall their aboundance be?
For I speake to you Gentiles, in as much as I am the Apostle of the Gentiles, I magnifie mine office:
GenevaFor in that I speake to you Gentiles, in as much as I am the Apostle of ye Gentiles, I magnifie mine office,
If by any means I may prouoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might saue some of them.
GenevaTo trie if by any meanes I might prouoke them of my flesh to follow them, and might saue some of them.
For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world: what shal the receiuing of them be, but life from the dead?
GenevaFor if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiuing be, but life from the dead?
εἰ γὰρ ἡ ἀποβολὴ αὐτῶν καταλλαγὴ κόσμου, τίς ἡ πρόσλημψις εἰ μὴ ζωὴ ἐκ νεκρῶν;
For if the first fruite bee holy, the lumpe is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
GenevaFor if the first fruites be holy, so is the whole lumpe: and if the roote be holy, so are the branches.
And if some of the branches bee broken off, and thou being a wilde oliue tree wert graffed in amongst them, and with them partakest of the roote and fatnesse of the Oliue tree:
GenevaAnd though some of the branches be broken off, and thou being a wilde Oliue tree, wast graft in for them, and made partaker of the roote, and fatnesse of the Oliue tree.
Boast not against the branches: but if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
GenevaBoast not thy selfe against the branches: and if thou boast thy selfe, thou bearest not the roote, but the roote thee.
Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might bee graffed in.
GenevaThou wilt say then, The branches are broken off, that I might be graft in.
Well: because of vnbeliefe they were broken off, and thou standest by fayth. Be not high minded, but feare.
GenevaWell: through vnbeliefe they are broken off, and thou standest by faith: bee not hie minded, but feare.
For if God spared not the natural branches, take heede least hee also spare not thee.
GenevaFor if God spared not the naturall branches, take heede, least he also spare not thee.
Beholde therefore the goodnesse and seueritie of God: on them which fell, seueritie; but towards thee, goodnesse, if thou continue in his goodnesse: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
GenevaBeholde therefore the bountifulnesse, and seueritie of God: towarde them which haue fallen, seueritie: but toward thee, bountifulnesse, if thou continue in his bountifulnesse: or els thou shalt also be cut off.
And they also, if they bide not still in vnbeliefe, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graffe them in againe.
GenevaAnd they also, if they abide not still in vnbeliefe, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graffe them in againe.
For if thou wert cut out of the Oliue tree which is wilde by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good Oliue tree: how much more shall these which be the naturall branches, bee graffed into their owne Oliue tree?
GenevaFor if thou wast cut out of the Oliue tree, which was wilde by nature, and wast graffed contrary to nature in a right Oliue tree, how much more shall they that are by nature, bee graffed in their owne Oliue tree?
For I would not, brethren, that ye should bee ignorant of this mysterie (least yee should bee wise in your owne conceits) that blindnesse in part is happened to Israel, vntill the fulnes of the Gentiles be come in.
GenevaFor I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this secret (least ye should bee arrogant in your selues) that partly obstinacie is come to Israel, vntill the fulnesse of the Gentiles be come in.
And so all Israel shall be saued, as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliuerer, and shall turne away vngodlinesse from Iacob.
GenevaAnd so all Israel shalbe saued, as it is written, The deliuerer shall come out of Sion, and shall turne away the vngodlinesse from Iacob.
For this is my couenant vnto them, when I shall take away their sinnes.
GenevaAnd this is my couenant to them, When I shall take away their sinnes.
As concerning the Gospel, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are beloued for the fathers sakes.
GenevaAs concerning the Gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloued for the fathers sakes.
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
GenevaFor the giftes and calling of God are without repentance.
For as yee in times past haue not beleeued God, yet haue now obtained mercy through their vnbeliefe:
GenevaFor euen as yee in times past haue not beleeued God, yet haue nowe obteined mercie through their vnbeliefe:
Euen so haue these also now not beleeued, that through your mercy they also may obtaine mercy.
GenevaEuen so nowe haue they not beleeued by the mercie shewed vnto you, that they also may obtaine mercie.
For God hath concluded them all in vnbeliefe, that he might haue mercy vpon all.
GenevaFor God hath shut vp all in vnbeliefe, that he might haue mercie on all.
O the depth of the riches both of the wisedome and knowledge of God! how vnsearchable are his iudgements, and his wayes past finding out!
GenevaO the deepenesse of the riches, both of the wisdome, and knowledge of God! howe vnsearcheable are his iudgements, and his wayes past finding out!
For who hath knowen the mind of the Lord, or who hath bene his counseller?
GenevaFor who hath knowen the minde of the Lord? or who was his counsellour?
Τίς γὰρ ἔγνω νοῦν κυρίου; ἢ τίς σύμβουλος αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο;
Or who hath first giuen to him, and it shall bee recompensed vnto him againe?
GenevaOr who hath giuen vnto him first, and he shalbe recompensed?
ἢ τίς προέδωκεν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἀνταποδοθήσεται αὐτῷ;
For of him, and through him, and to him are all things: to whom be glory for euer. Amen.
GenevaFor of him, and through him, and for him are all things: to him be glory for euer. Amen.
