Ecclesiastes 10
Dead flies cause the oyntment of the Apothecarie to send foorth a stinking sauour: so doeth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisedome and honour.
GenevaDead flies cause to stinke, and putrifie the ointment of the apoticarie: so doeth a litle follie him that is in estimation for wisedome, and for glorie.
זְב֣וּבֵי מָ֔וֶת יַבְאִ֥ישׁ יַבִּ֖יעַ שֶׁ֣מֶן רוֹקֵ֑חַ יָקָ֛ר מֵ/חָכְמָ֥ה מִ/כָּב֖וֹד סִכְל֥וּת מְעָֽט
A wise mans heart is at his right hand: but a fooles heart at his left.
GenevaThe heart of a wise man is at his right hand: but the heart of a foole is at his left hand.
לֵ֤ב חָכָם֙ לִֽ/ימִינ֔/וֹ וְ/לֵ֥ב כְּסִ֖יל לִ/שְׂמֹאלֽ/וֹ
Yea also when hee that is a foole walketh by the way, his wisedome faileth him, and hee saith to euery one that he is a foole.
GenevaAnd also when the foole goeth by the way, his heart faileth, and he telleth vnto all that he is a foole.
וְ/גַם בַּ/דֶּ֛רֶךְ כ/ש/ה/סכל הֹלֵ֖ךְ לִבּ֣/וֹ חָסֵ֑ר וְ/אָמַ֥ר לַ/כֹּ֖ל סָכָ֥ל הֽוּא
If the spirit of the ruler rise vp against thee, leaue not thy place; for yeelding pacifieth great offences.
GenevaIf the spirite of him that ruleth, rise vp against thee, leaue not thy place: for gentlenes pacifieth great sinnes.
אִם ר֤וּחַ הַ/מּוֹשֵׁל֙ תַּעֲלֶ֣ה עָלֶ֔י/ךָ מְקוֹמְ/ךָ֖ אַל תַּנַּ֑ח כִּ֣י מַרְפֵּ֔א יַנִּ֖יחַ חֲטָאִ֥ים גְּדוֹלִֽים
There is an euill which I haue seene vnder the Sunne, as an errour, which proceedeth from the ruler.

יֵ֣שׁ רָעָ֔ה רָאִ֖יתִי תַּ֣חַת הַ/שָּׁ֑מֶשׁ כִּ/שְׁגָגָ֕ה שֶׁ/יֹּצָ֖א מִ/לִּ/פְנֵ֥י הַ/שַּׁלִּֽיט
Folly is set in great dignitie; and the rich sit in lowe place.
GenevaFollie is set in great excellencie, and the riche set in the lowe place.
נִתַּ֣ן הַ/סֶּ֔כֶל בַּ/מְּרוֹמִ֖ים רַבִּ֑ים וַ/עֲשִׁירִ֖ים בַּ/שֵּׁ֥פֶל יֵשֵֽׁבוּ
I haue seene seruants vpon horses, and princes walking as seruants vpon the earth.
GenevaI haue seene seruants on horses, and princes walking as seruants on the ground.
רָאִ֥יתִי עֲבָדִ֖ים עַל סוּסִ֑ים וְ/שָׂרִ֛ים הֹלְכִ֥ים כַּ/עֲבָדִ֖ים עַל הָ/אָֽרֶץ
He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it; and who so breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
GenevaHe that diggeth a pit, shall fal into it, and he that breaketh the hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
חֹפֵ֥ר גּוּמָּ֖ץ בּ֣/וֹ יִפּ֑וֹל וּ/פֹרֵ֥ץ גָּדֵ֖ר יִשְּׁכֶ֥/נּוּ נָחָֽשׁ
Who so remoueth stones, shall be hurt therewith: and hee that cleaueth wood, shalbe endangered thereby.
GenevaHe that remooueth stones, shall hurt himselfe thereby, and hee that cutteth wood, shall be in danger thereby.
מַסִּ֣יעַ אֲבָנִ֔ים יֵעָצֵ֖ב בָּ/הֶ֑ם בּוֹקֵ֥עַ עֵצִ֖ים יִסָּ֥כֶן בָּֽ/ם
If the yron be blunt, and he doe not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisedome is profitable to direct.
GenevaIf the yron be blunt, and one hath not whet the edge, he must then put to more strength: but the excellencie to direct a thing is wisedome.
אִם קֵהָ֣ה הַ/בַּרְזֶ֗ל וְ/הוּא֙ לֹא פָנִ֣ים קִלְקַ֔ל וַ/חֲיָלִ֖ים יְגַבֵּ֑ר וְ/יִתְר֥וֹן הכשיר חָכְמָֽה
Surely the serpent will bite without inchauntment, and a babbler is no better.
GenevaIf the serpent bite, when he is not charmed: no better is a babbler.
אִם יִשֹּׁ֥ךְ הַ/נָּחָ֖שׁ בְּ/לוֹא לָ֑חַשׁ וְ/אֵ֣ין יִתְר֔וֹן לְ/בַ֖עַל הַ/לָּשֽׁוֹן
The words of a wise mans mouth are gratious: but the lips of a foole will swallow vp himselfe.
GenevaThe words of ye mouth of a wise man haue grace: but the lippes of a foole deuoure himselfe.
דִּבְרֵ֥י פִי חָכָ֖ם חֵ֑ן וְ/שִׂפְת֥וֹת כְּסִ֖יל תְּבַלְּעֶֽ/נּוּ
The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishnesse: and the end of his talke is mischieuous madnesse.
GenevaThe beginning of the wordes of his mouth is foolishnesse, and the latter ende of his mouth is wicked madnesse.
תְּחִלַּ֥ת דִּבְרֵי פִ֖י/הוּ סִכְל֑וּת וְ/אַחֲרִ֣ית פִּ֔י/הוּ הוֹלֵל֖וּת רָעָֽה
A foole also is full of words; a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall bee after him who can tell him?
GenevaFor the foole multiplieth woordes, saying, Man knoweth not what shall be: and who can tell him what shall be after him?
וְ/הַ/סָּכָ֖ל יַרְבֶּ֣ה דְבָרִ֑ים לֹא יֵדַ֤ע הָ/אָדָם֙ מַה שֶׁ/יִּֽהְיֶ֔ה וַ/אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִֽהְיֶה֙ מֵֽ/אַחֲרָ֔י/ו מִ֖י יַגִּ֥יד לֽ/וֹ
The labour of the foolish wearyeth euery one of them; because hee knoweth not how to goe to the citie.
GenevaThe labour of the foolish doeth wearie him: for he knoweth not to goe into the citie.
עֲמַ֥ל הַ/כְּסִילִ֖ים תְּיַגְּעֶ֑/נּוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא יָדַ֖ע לָ/לֶ֥כֶת אֶל עִֽיר
¶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eate in the morning.
GenevaWoe to thee, O lande, when thy King is a childe, and thy princes eate in the morning.
אִֽי לָ֣/ךְ אֶ֔רֶץ שֶׁ/מַּלְכֵּ֖/ךְ נָ֑עַר וְ/שָׂרַ֖יִ/ךְ בַּ/בֹּ֥קֶר יֹאכֵֽלוּ
Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the sonne of nobles, and thy princes eate in due season, for strength, and not for drunkennesse.
GenevaBlessed art thou, O land, when thy King is the sonne of nobles, and thy princes eate in time, for strength and not for drunkennesse.
אַשְׁרֵ֣י/ךְ אֶ֔רֶץ שֶׁ/מַּלְכֵּ֖/ךְ בֶּן חוֹרִ֑ים וְ/שָׂרַ֨יִ/ךְ֙ בָּ/עֵ֣ת יֹאכֵ֔לוּ בִּ/גְבוּרָ֖ה וְ/לֹ֥א בַ/שְּׁתִֽי
¶ By much slouthfulnesse the building decayeth; and through idlenesse of the hands the house droppeth through.
GenevaBy slouthfulnes the roofe of the house goeth to decaie, and by the ydlenesse of the handes the house droppeth through.
בַּ/עֲצַלְתַּ֖יִם יִמַּ֣ךְ הַ/מְּקָרֶ֑ה וּ/בְ/שִׁפְל֥וּת יָדַ֖יִם יִדְלֹ֥ף הַ/בָּֽיִת
¶ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
GenevaThey prepare bread for laughter, and wine comforteth the liuing, but siluer answereth to all.
לִ/שְׂחוֹק֙ עֹשִׂ֣ים לֶ֔חֶם וְ/יַ֖יִן יְשַׂמַּ֣ח חַיִּ֑ים וְ/הַ/כֶּ֖סֶף יַעֲנֶ֥ה אֶת הַ/כֹּֽל
¶ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought, and curse not the rich in thy bed-chamber: for a bird of the aire shall carry the voyce, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
GenevaCurse not the King, no not in thy thought, neither curse the rich in thy bed chamber: for the foule of the heauen shall carie the voice, and that which hath wings, shall declare the matter.
גַּ֣ם בְּ/מַדָּֽעֲ/ךָ֗ מֶ֚לֶךְ אַל תְּקַלֵּ֔ל וּ/בְ/חַדְרֵי֙ מִשְׁכָּ֣בְ/ךָ֔ אַל תְּקַלֵּ֖ל עָשִׁ֑יר כִּ֣י ע֤וֹף הַ/שָּׁמַ֨יִם֙ יוֹלִ֣יךְ אֶת הַ/קּ֔וֹל וּ/בַ֥עַל ה/כנפים יַגֵּ֥יד דָּבָֽר
