Chapter 18
Jeremiah 18
The word which came to Ieremiah from þ LORD saying,
GenevaThe worde which came to Ieremiah from the Lord, saying,
הַ/דָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֣ה אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ מֵ/אֵ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה לֵ/אמֹֽר
Arise and go downe to the potters house, & there I will cause thee to heare my words.
GenevaArise, and go downe into the potters house, and there shall I shewe thee my words.
ק֥וּם וְ/יָרַדְתָּ֖ בֵּ֣ית הַ/יּוֹצֵ֑ר וְ/שָׁ֖מָּ/ה אַשְׁמִֽיעֲ/ךָ֥ אֶת דְּבָרָֽ/י
Then I went downe to the potters house, and behold, hee wrought a worke on the wheeles.

וָ/אֵרֵ֖ד בֵּ֣ית הַ/יּוֹצֵ֑ר ו/הנ/הו עֹשֶׂ֥ה מְלָאכָ֖ה עַל הָ/אָבְנָֽיִם
And the vessell that he made of clay, was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it againe another vessell as seemed good to the potter to make it.
GenevaAnd the vessell that he made of clay, was broken in the hand of the potter. so he returned, and made it another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
וְ/נִשְׁחַ֣ת הַ/כְּלִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר ה֥וּא עֹשֶׂ֛ה בַּ/חֹ֖מֶר בְּ/יַ֣ד הַ/יּוֹצֵ֑ר וְ/שָׁ֗ב וַֽ/יַּעֲשֵׂ֨/הוּ֙ כְּלִ֣י אַחֵ֔ר כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָשַׁ֛ר בְּ/עֵינֵ֥י הַ/יּוֹצֵ֖ר לַ/עֲשֽׂוֹת
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
GenevaThen the worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying,
וַ/יְהִ֥י דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥/י לֵ/אמֽוֹר
O house of Israel, cannot I doe with you as this potter, saith the LORD ? Behold, as the clay is in the potters hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

הֲ/כַ/יּוֹצֵ֨ר הַ/זֶּ֜ה לֹא אוּכַ֨ל לַ/עֲשׂ֥וֹת לָ/כֶ֛ם בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה הִנֵּ֤ה כַ/חֹ֨מֶר֙ בְּ/יַ֣ד הַ/יּוֹצֵ֔ר כֵּן אַתֶּ֥ם בְּ/יָדִ֖/י בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
At what instant I shall speake concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdome, to plucke vp and to pull downe, and to destroy it.
GenevaI will speake suddenly against a nation or against a kingdome to plucke it vp, and to roote it out and to destroy it.
רֶ֣גַע אֲדַבֵּ֔ר עַל גּ֖וֹי וְ/עַל מַמְלָכָ֑ה לִ/נְת֥וֹשׁ וְ/לִ/נְת֖וֹץ וּֽ/לְ/הַאֲבִֽיד
If that nation against whom I haue pronounced, turne from their euill, I will repent of the euill that I thought to doe vnto them.
GenevaBut if this nation, against whom I haue pronounced, turne from their wickednesse, I will repent of the plague that I thought to bring vpon them.
וְ/שָׁב֙ הַ/גּ֣וֹי הַ/ה֔וּא מֵ/רָ֣עָת֔/וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי עָלָ֑י/ו וְ/נִֽחַמְתִּי֙ עַל הָ֣/רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָשַׁ֖בְתִּי לַ/עֲשׂ֥וֹת לֽ/וֹ
And at what instant I shall speake concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdome to build and to plant it;
GenevaAnd I wil speake suddenly concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdome to builde it and to plant it.
וְ/רֶ֣גַע אֲדַבֵּ֔ר עַל גּ֖וֹי וְ/עַל מַמְלָכָ֑ה לִ/בְנֹ֖ת וְ/לִ/נְטֹֽעַ
If it doe euill in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good; wherewith I saide I would benefite them.
GenevaBut if it do euill in my sight and heare not my voyce, I will repent of ye good that I thought to do for them.
וְ/עָשָׂ֤ה ה/רעה בְּ/עֵינַ֔/י לְ/בִלְתִּ֖י שְׁמֹ֣עַ בְּ/קוֹלִ֑/י וְ/נִֽחַמְתִּי֙ עַל הַ/טּוֹבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמַ֖רְתִּי לְ/הֵיטִ֥יב אוֹתֽ/וֹ
¶ Now therefore goe to, speake to the men of Iudah, and to the inhabitants of Ierusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame euill against you, and deuise a deuice against you: returne ye now euery one from his euill way, and make your waies and your doings good.
GenevaSpeake thou nowe therefore vnto the men of Iudah, and to the inhabitants of Ierusalem, saying, Thus saith ye Lord, Behold, I prepare a plague for you, and purpose a thing against you: returne you therefore euery one from his euill way, and make your wayes and your workes good.
וְ/עַתָּ֡ה אֱמָר נָ֣א אֶל אִישׁ יְהוּדָה֩ וְ/עַל יוֹשְׁבֵ֨י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם לֵ/אמֹ֗ר כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י יוֹצֵ֤ר עֲלֵי/כֶם֙ רָעָ֔ה וְ/חֹשֵׁ֥ב עֲלֵי/כֶ֖ם מַֽחֲשָׁבָ֑ה שׁ֣וּבוּ נָ֗א אִ֚ישׁ מִ/דַּרְכּ֣/וֹ הָֽ/רָעָ֔ה וְ/הֵיטִ֥יבוּ דַרְכֵי/כֶ֖ם וּ/מַעַלְלֵי/כֶֽם
And they said, There is no hope, but wee will walke after our owne deuices, and wee will euery one doe the imagination of his euil heart.
GenevaBut they sayde desperately, Surely wee will walke after our owne imaginations, and doe euery man after the stubburnnesse of his wicked heart.
וְ/אָמְר֖וּ נוֹאָ֑שׁ כִּֽי אַחֲרֵ֤י מַחְשְׁבוֹתֵ֨י/נוּ֙ נֵלֵ֔ךְ וְ/אִ֛ישׁ שְׁרִר֥וּת לִבּֽ/וֹ הָ/רָ֖ע נַעֲשֶֽׂה
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Aske ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things? the Uirgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.
GenevaTherefore thus saith the Lord, Aske now among the heathen, who hath heard such thinges? the virgin of Israel hath done very filthily.
לָ/כֵ֗ן כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַֽׁאֲלוּ נָא֙ בַּ/גּוֹיִ֔ם מִ֥י שָׁמַ֖ע כָּ/אֵ֑לֶּה שַֽׁעֲרֻרִת֙ עָשְׂתָ֣ה מְאֹ֔ד בְּתוּלַ֖ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
Will a man leaue the snow of Lebanon which commeth from the rocke of the fielde? or shall the colde flowing waters that come from another place, be forsaken?

הֲ/יַעֲזֹ֥ב מִ/צּ֛וּר שָׂדַ֖י שֶׁ֣לֶג לְבָנ֑וֹן אִם יִנָּתְשׁ֗וּ מַ֛יִם זָרִ֥ים קָרִ֖ים נוֹזְלִֽים
Because my people hath forgotten mee, they haue burnt incense to vanitie, and they haue caused them to stumble in their waies from the ancient paths, to walke in paths, in a way not cast vp,
GenevaBecause my people hath forgotten me, and haue burnt incense to vanitie, and their prophets haue caused them to stumble in their wayes from the auncient wayes, to walke in the pathes and way that is not troden,
כִּֽי שְׁכֵחֻ֥/נִי עַמִּ֖/י לַ/שָּׁ֣וְא יְקַטֵּ֑רוּ וַ/יַּכְשִׁל֤וּ/ם בְּ/דַרְכֵי/הֶם֙ שְׁבִילֵ֣י עוֹלָ֔ם לָ/לֶ֣כֶת נְתִיב֔וֹת דֶּ֖רֶךְ לֹ֥א סְלוּלָֽה
To make their land desolate and a perpetuall hissing: euery one that passeth thereby shall bee astonished, and wagge his head.

לָ/שׂ֥וּם אַרְצָ֛/ם לְ/שַׁמָּ֖ה שרוקת עוֹלָ֑ם כֹּ֚ל עוֹבֵ֣ר עָלֶ֔י/הָ יִשֹּׁ֖ם וְ/יָנִ֥יד בְּ/רֹאשֽׁ/וֹ
I will scatter them as with an East winde before the enemie: I will shew them the backe, and not the face, in the day of their calamitie.

כְּ/רֽוּחַ קָדִ֥ים אֲפִיצֵ֖/ם לִ/פְנֵ֣י אוֹיֵ֑ב עֹ֧רֶף וְ/לֹֽא פָנִ֛ים אֶרְאֵ֖/ם בְּ/י֥וֹם אֵידָֽ/ם
¶ Then said they, Come, and let vs deuise deuices against Ieremiah: for the Law shall not perish from the Priest, nor counsell from the wise, nor the word from the prophet: Come and let vs smite him with the tongue, and let vs not giue heede to any of his wordes.

וַ/יֹּאמְר֗וּ לְכ֨וּ וְ/נַחְשְׁבָ֣ה עַֽל יִרְמְיָהוּ֮ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת֒ כִּי֩ לֹא תֹאבַ֨ד תּוֹרָ֜ה מִ/כֹּהֵ֗ן וְ/עֵצָה֙ מֵֽ/חָכָ֔ם וְ/דָבָ֖ר מִ/נָּבִ֑יא לְכוּ֙ וְ/נַכֵּ֣/הוּ בַ/לָּשׁ֔וֹן וְ/אַל נַקְשִׁ֖יבָה אֶל כָּל דְּבָרָֽי/ו
Giue heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.
GenevaHearken vnto mee, O Lord, and heare the voyce of them that contend with me.
הַקְשִׁ֥יבָ/ה יְהוָ֖ה אֵלָ֑/י וּ/שְׁמַ֖ע לְ/ק֥וֹל יְרִיבָֽ/י
Shall euill bee recompensed for good? for they haue digged a pit for my soule: remember that I stood before thee to speake good for them, and to turne away thy wrath from them.

הַ/יְשֻׁלַּ֤ם תַּֽחַת טוֹבָה֙ רָעָ֔ה כִּֽי כָר֥וּ שׁוּחָ֖ה לְ/נַפְשִׁ֑/י זְכֹ֣ר עָמְדִ֣/י לְ/פָנֶ֗י/ךָ לְ/דַבֵּ֤ר עֲלֵי/הֶם֙ טוֹבָ֔ה לְ/הָשִׁ֥יב אֶת חֲמָתְ/ךָ֖ מֵ/הֶֽם
Therefore deliuer vp their children to the famine, and powre out their blood by the force of the sword, and let their wiues be bereaued of their children and be widowes, and let their men be put to death, let their yong men be slaine by the sword in battell.

לָ/כֵן֩ תֵּ֨ן אֶת בְּנֵי/הֶ֜ם לָ/רָעָ֗ב וְ/הַגִּרֵ/ם֮ עַל יְדֵי חֶרֶב֒ וְ/תִֽהְיֶ֨נָה נְשֵׁי/הֶ֤ם שַׁכֻּלוֹת֙ וְ/אַלְמָנ֔וֹת וְ/אַ֨נְשֵׁי/הֶ֔ם יִֽהְי֖וּ הֲרֻ֣גֵי מָ֑וֶת בַּח֣וּרֵי/הֶ֔ם מֻכֵּי חֶ֖רֶב בַּ/מִּלְחָמָֽה
Let a crie bee heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troupe suddenly vpon them, for they haue digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

תִּשָּׁמַ֤ע זְעָקָה֙ מִ/בָּ֣תֵּי/הֶ֔ם כִּֽי תָבִ֧יא עֲלֵי/הֶ֛ם גְּד֖וּד פִּתְאֹ֑ם כִּֽי כָר֤וּ שיחה לְ/לָכְדֵ֔/נִי וּ/פַחִ֖ים טָמְנ֥וּ לְ/רַגְלָֽ/י
Yet LORD thou knowest all their counsell against me to slay mee: forgiue not their iniquitie, neither blot out their sinne from thy sight, but let them bee ouerthrowen before thee, deale thus with them in the time of thine anger.

וְ/אַתָּ֣ה יְ֠הוָה יָדַ֜עְתָּ אֶֽת כָּל עֲצָתָ֤/ם עָלַ/י֙ לַ/מָּ֔וֶת אַל תְּכַפֵּר֙ עַל עֲוֺנָ֔/ם וְ/חַטָּאתָ֖/ם מִ/לְּ/פָנֶ֣י/ךָ אַל תֶּ֑מְחִי ו/היו מֻכְשָׁלִים֙ לְ/פָנֶ֔י/ךָ בְּ/עֵ֥ת אַפְּ/ךָ֖ עֲשֵׂ֥ה בָ/הֶֽם
