Proverbs 1

The Prouerbes of Solomon the sonne of Dauid, King of Israel,

GenevaThe Parables of Salomon the sonne of Dauid King of Israel,

מִ֭שְׁלֵי שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה בֶן דָּוִ֑ד מֶ֝֗לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

To knowe wisedome and instruction, to perceiue the words of vnderstanding,

GenevaTo knowe wisdome, and instruction, to vnderstand ye wordes of knowledge,

לָ/דַ֣עַת חָכְמָ֣ה וּ/מוּסָ֑ר לְ֝/הָבִ֗ין אִמְרֵ֥י בִינָֽה

To receiue the instruction of wisdome, iustice, and iudgement & equitie,

GenevaTo receiue instruction to do wisely, by iustice and iudgement and equitie,

לָ֭/קַחַת מוּסַ֣ר הַשְׂכֵּ֑ל צֶ֥דֶק וּ֝/מִשְׁפָּ֗ט וּ/מֵישָׁרִֽים

To giue subtiltie to the simple, to the yong man knowledge and discretion.

GenevaTo giue vnto the simple, sharpenesse of wit, and to the childe knowledge and discretion.

לָ/תֵ֣ת לִ/פְתָאיִ֣ם עָרְמָ֑ה לְ֝/נַ֗עַר דַּ֣עַת וּ/מְזִמָּֽה

A wise man wil heare, and wil increase learning: and a man of vnderstanding shall attaine vnto wise counsels:

GenevaA wise man shall heare and increase in learning, and a man of vnderstanding shall attayne vnto wise counsels,

יִשְׁמַ֣ע חָ֭כָם וְ/י֣וֹסֶף לֶ֑קַח וְ֝/נָב֗וֹן תַּחְבֻּל֥וֹת יִקְנֶֽה

To vnderstand a prouerbe, and the interpretation; the wordes of the wise, and their darke sayings.

GenevaTo vnderstand a parable, and the interpretation, the wordes of ye wise, and their darke sayings.

לְ/הָבִ֣ין מָ֭שָׁל וּ/מְלִיצָ֑ה דִּבְרֵ֥י חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים וְ/חִידֹתָֽ/ם

¶ The feare of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fooles despise wisedome and instruction.

יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה רֵאשִׁ֣ית דָּ֑עַת חָכְמָ֥ה וּ֝/מוּסָ֗ר אֱוִילִ֥ים בָּֽזוּ

My sonne, heare the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.

GenevaMy sonne, heare thy fathers instruction, and forsake not thy mothers teaching.

שְׁמַ֣ע בְּ֭נִ/י מוּסַ֣ר אָבִ֑י/ךָ וְ/אַל תִּ֝טֹּ֗שׁ תּוֹרַ֥ת אִמֶּֽ/ךָ

For they shall be an ornament of grace vnto thy head, and chaines about thy necke.

GenevaFor they shalbe a comely ornament vnto thine head, and as chaines for thy necke.

כִּ֤י לִוְיַ֤ת חֵ֓ן הֵ֬ם לְ/רֹאשֶׁ֑/ךָ וַ֝/עֲנָקִ֗ים לְ/גַרְגְּרֹתֶֽי/ךָ

¶ My sonne, if sinners entise thee, consent thou not.

GenevaMy sonne, if sinners doe intise thee, consent thou not.

בְּנִ֡/י אִם יְפַתּ֥וּ/ךָ חַ֝טָּאִ֗ים אַל תֹּבֵֽא

If they say, Come with vs, let vs lay wait for blood, let vs lurke priuily for the innocent without cause:

GenevaIf they say, Come with vs, we will lay waite for blood, and lie priuilie for the innocent without a cause:

אִם יֹאמְרוּ֮ לְכָ֪/ה אִ֫תָּ֥/נוּ נֶאֶרְבָ֥ה לְ/דָ֑ם נִצְפְּנָ֖ה לְ/נָקִ֣י חִנָּֽם

Let vs swallow them vp aliue, as the graue, and whole, as those that goe downe into the pit:

GenevaWe wil swallow them vp aliue like a graue euen whole, as those that goe downe into the pit:

נִ֭בְלָעֵ/ם כִּ/שְׁא֣וֹל חַיִּ֑ים וּ֝/תְמִימִ֗ים כְּ/י֣וֹרְדֵי בֽוֹר

Wee shall finde all precious substance, wee shall fill our houses with spoile:

GenevaWe shall finde all precious riches, and fill our houses with spoyle:

כָּל ה֣וֹן יָקָ֣ר נִמְצָ֑א נְמַלֵּ֖א בָתֵּ֣י/נוּ שָׁלָֽל

Cast in thy lot among vs, let vs all haue one purse:

GenevaCast in thy lot among vs: we will all haue one purse:

גּ֭וֹרָ֣לְ/ךָ תַּפִּ֣יל בְּ/תוֹכֵ֑/נוּ כִּ֥יס אֶ֝חָ֗ד יִהְיֶ֥ה לְ/כֻלָּֽ/נוּ

My sonne, walke not thou in the way with them; refraine thy foot from their path:

GenevaMy sonne, walke not thou in the way with them: refraine thy foote from their path.

בְּנִ֗/י אַל תֵּלֵ֣ךְ בְּ/דֶ֣רֶךְ אִתָּ֑/ם מְנַ֥ע רַ֝גְלְ/ךָ֗ מִ/נְּתִיבָתָֽ/ם

For their feete runne to euil, and make haste to shed blood.

GenevaFor their feete runne to euill, and make haste to shed blood.

כִּ֣י רַ֭גְלֵי/הֶם לָ/רַ֣ע יָר֑וּצוּ וִֽ֝/ימַהֲר֗וּ לִ/שְׁפָּךְ דָּֽם

Surely in vaine the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

GenevaCertainely as without cause the net is spred before the eyes of all that hath wing:

כִּֽי חִ֭נָּם מְזֹרָ֣ה הָ/רָ֑שֶׁת בְּ֝/עֵינֵ֗י כָל בַּ֥עַל כָּנָֽף

And they lay wait for their owne blood, they lurke priuily for their owne liues.

GenevaSo they lay waite for blood and lie priuily for their liues.

וְ֭/הֵם לְ/דָמָ֣/ם יֶאֱרֹ֑בוּ יִ֝צְפְּנ֗וּ לְ/נַפְשֹׁתָֽ/ם

So are the waies of euery one that is greedie of gaine: which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

כֵּ֗ן אָ֭רְחוֹת כָּל בֹּ֣צֵֽעַ בָּ֑צַע אֶת נֶ֖פֶשׁ בְּעָלָ֣י/ו יִקָּֽח

¶ Wisedome crieth without, she vttereth her voice in the streets:

GenevaWisdome cryeth without: she vttereth her voyce in the streetes.

חָ֭כְמוֹת בַּ/ח֣וּץ תָּרֹ֑נָּה בָּ֝/רְחֹב֗וֹת תִּתֵּ֥ן קוֹלָֽ/הּ

Shee crieth in the chiefe place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she vttereth her words, saying,

GenevaShe calleth in the hye streete, among the prease in the entrings of the gates, and vttereth her wordes in the citie, saying,

בְּ/רֹ֥אשׁ הֹמִיּ֗וֹת תִּ֫קְרָ֥א בְּ/פִתְחֵ֖י שְׁעָרִ֥ים בָּ/עִ֗יר אֲמָרֶ֥י/הָ תֹאמֵֽר

How long, ye simple ones, will ye loue simplicitie? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fooles hate knowledge?

GenevaO ye foolish, howe long will ye loue foolishnes? and the scornefull take their pleasure in scorning, and the fooles hate knowledge?

עַד מָתַ֣י פְּתָיִם֮ תְּֽאֵהֲב֫וּ פֶ֥תִי וְ/לֵצִ֗ים לָ֭צוֹן חָמְד֣וּ לָ/הֶ֑ם וּ֝/כְסִילִ֗ים יִשְׂנְאוּ דָֽעַת

Turne you at my reproofe: behold, I will powre out my spirit vnto you, I will make knowen my wordes vnto you.

Geneva(Turne you at my correction: loe, I will powre out my mind vnto you, and make you vnderstand my wordes)

תָּשׁ֗וּבוּ לְֽ/ת֫וֹכַחְתִּ֥/י הִנֵּ֤ה אַבִּ֣יעָה לָ/כֶ֣ם רוּחִ֑/י אוֹדִ֖יעָה דְבָרַ֣/י אֶתְ/כֶֽם

¶ Because I haue called, and yee refused, I haue stretched out my hand, and no man regarded:

GenevaBecause I haue called, and ye refused: I haue stretched out mine hand, and none woulde regarde.

יַ֣עַן קָ֭רָאתִי וַ/תְּמָאֵ֑נוּ נָטִ֥יתִי יָ֝דִ֗/י וְ/אֵ֣ין מַקְשִֽׁיב

But ye haue set at nought all my counsell, & would none of my reproofe:

GenevaBut ye haue despised all my counsell, and would none of my correction.

וַ/תִּפְרְע֥וּ כָל עֲצָתִ֑/י וְ֝/תוֹכַחְתִּ֗/י לֹ֣א אֲבִיתֶֽם

I also will laugh at your calamitie, I wil mocke when your feare commeth.

GenevaI will also laugh at your destruction, and mocke, when your feare commeth.

גַּם אֲ֭נִי בְּ/אֵידְ/כֶ֣ם אֶשְׂחָ֑ק אֶ֝לְעַ֗ג בְּ/בֹ֣א פַחְדְּ/כֶֽם

When your feare commeth as desolation, and your destruction commeth as a whirlewinde; when distresse and anguish commeth vpon you:

GenevaWhe your feare cometh like sudden desolation, and your destruction shall come like a whirle wind: whe affliction and anguish shall come vpon you,

בְּ/בֹ֤א כ/שאוה פַּחְדְּ/כֶ֗ם וְֽ֭/אֵידְ/כֶם כְּ/סוּפָ֣ה יֶאֱתֶ֑ה בְּ/בֹ֥א עֲ֝לֵי/כֶ֗ם צָרָ֥ה וְ/צוּקָֽה

Then shall they call vpon mee, but I will not answere; they shall seeke me early, but they shall not finde me:

אָ֣ז יִ֭קְרָאֻ/נְנִי וְ/לֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה יְ֝שַׁחֲרֻ֗/נְנִי וְ/לֹ֣א יִמְצָאֻֽ/נְנִי

For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the feare of the LORD.

GenevaBecause they hated knowledge, and did not chuse the feare of the Lord.

תַּ֭חַת כִּי שָׂ֣נְאוּ דָ֑עַת וְ/יִרְאַ֥ת יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה לֹ֣א בָחָֽרוּ

They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproofe.

GenevaThey would none of my counsell, but despised all my correction.

לֹא אָב֥וּ לַ/עֲצָתִ֑/י נָ֝אֲצ֗וּ כָּל תּוֹכַחְתִּֽ/י

Therefore shall they eate of the fruite of their owne way, and be filled with their owne deuices.

GenevaTherefore shall they eate of ye fruite of their owne way, and be filled with their owne deuises.

וְֽ֭/יֹאכְלוּ מִ/פְּרִ֣י דַרְכָּ֑/ם וּֽ/מִ/מֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵי/הֶ֣ם יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ

For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fooles shall destroy them.

GenevaFor ease slaieth the foolish, and the prosperitie of fooles destroyeth them.

כִּ֤י מְשׁוּבַ֣ת פְּתָיִ֣ם תַּֽהַרְגֵ֑/ם וְ/שַׁלְוַ֖ת כְּסִילִ֣ים תְּאַבְּדֵֽ/ם

But who so hearkneth vnto mee, shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from feare of euill.

GenevaBut he that obeyeth me, shall dwell safely, and be quiet from feare of euill.

וְ/שֹׁמֵ֣עַֽ לִ֭/י יִשְׁכָּן בֶּ֑טַח וְ֝/שַׁאֲנַ֗ן מִ/פַּ֥חַד רָעָֽה
